Man in local jail on non-local murder charge

SIDNEY — A man was housed in the Shelby County Jail Friday afternoon on a murder charge, but not for a local case.

Joseph Christopher Hill, 31, was placed in the jail at 1:45 p.m. Friday, according information on the jail’s website. Chief Deputy Jim Frye said Hill is a “federal inmate” and is not being held in connection with any local cases.

Frye said he did not have information on Hill’s case, but added the local jail often houses such prisoners. “We get quite a few federal inmates,” he said.

The jail contracts to house such prisoners and derives income from this, Frye said.

Frye said, for example, authorities might ask the local jail to house a prisoner if that person would be endangered by being housed at another facility.
