Russia grad earns All-American honors

Russia High School graduate and Ohio Northern junior setter Ashley Borchers was named Honorable Mention All-America in volleyball for the 2015 season in voting conducted by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Borchers had already been named first team All-Ohio Athletic Conference and first team All-Great Lakes Region this season.

She is the 15th All-American in ONU volleyball history, and is now a two-time All-OAC honoree.

This season, Borchers was third in the OAC with 1,083 assists. She was sixth on the team with 179 kills, was fourth with 26 aces, was third with 72 blocks and was fifth with 216 digs.

Borchers will enter her senior season ranked sixth all-time at ONU with 2,285 career assists.

Julie Hoying, Fort Loramie — Hoying has been named to the All-Crossroads League second team in voting announced recently. She plays for Marian University in Indianapolis and had an outstanding volleyball season.

She led the Crossroads League in assists per set at 9.9 and also led the league in aces per set. In addition, she was second overall in the league with 42 aces.

She finished with 74 kills, 864 assists, and 208 digs.

Jessica Thobe, Lehman — Thobe plays volleyball at Wheeling Jesuit, and this week she was named the Mountain East Conference Libero of the Year.

Thobe has anchored the defense all season for Wheeling, which is 31-4 on the year and still in tournament play. She led her team and was second in the conference in digs per set with 5.01, totaling 546 digs in 109 sets. After being a defensive specialist/outside hitter last year, the senior All-MEC first-team pick posted a season-high 28 digs against Virginia-Wise and had 12 matches with 19-or-more digs.

In action this week, she had 17 digs against both West Virginia State and Charleston, 25 against Cedarville and 19 against West Virginia State in a first-round conference tournament match.

Andrea Thobe, Lehman — Andrea joined her sister Jessica on the All-MEC first team as the setter. A junior, Thobe was the top MEC assist producer and tied for fifth in the NCAA Division 2 rankings with 12.05 assists per set.

The 2014 MEC player of the year, she handed out 1,320 assists over 110 sets this season, and set a season high of 69 assists in a five-set win against Indianapolis. She averages 38.8 assists per match, with 14 matches with over 40 assists.

In action this week, she had 35 assists in a 3-0 win over West Virgnia State, 38 assists and 11 digs in a 3-0 win over Charleston, 43 assists in a 3-0 win over Cedarville, and 37 assists in a 3-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan.

Trey Elchert, Jackson Center — Elchert had a good game for Bluffton in men’s basketball, helping the team to a win over OSU-Lima. He finished with 11 points and two assists, and missed only one shot from the field all night. He was 4-for-5 overall and 3-for-4 from three-point range.

Erica Huber, Anna — Huber has her season off to a fast start at Ursuline College in northeast Ohio. Ursuline opened regular-season play last week, and won twice. Huber had 16 points and six rebounds against Mount Vernon Nazarene, and 18 points and four assists in a win over Lake Erie. She was 6-for-7 from the line in that game, and is 8-for-11 so far on the year.

Andy Hoying, Jackson Center — Hoying is back for Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania, and in two games this week, he had nine points and three assists against Houghton, and seven points and four rebounds against Indiana-Pennsylvania, both Mercyhurst wins.

Amanda Winner, Versailles — Winner had a huge week in volleyball for Findlay, finishing with 16 kills in a 3-0 win over Lake Erie, 23 kills in a 3-2 win over Ashland, and 16 kills in a 3-1 win over Northwood in the conference tournament.

Haley Horstman, New Knoxville — Horstman had a solid pair of games in women’s basketball at Findlay. She had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists against Trevecca Nazarene, and 12 points and seven rebounds against Kentucky Wesleyan, both victories. She was 10-for-18 from the field combined in the two games.

Margaret Wuebker, Marion Local — Wuebker is also a member of the women’s basketball team at Findlay, and had 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists against Trevecca, and eight points, nine rebounds and three assists against Kentucky Wesleyan.

Tori Thompson, Riverside — Thompson and Ohio Dominican are still playing volleyball, and in action this week, she had 11 kills and 10 digs in a 3-0 over Walsh, and 20 kills and seven digs in a 3-2 win over Malone.

Darian Rose, Fort Loramie — Rose and Ohio Dominican got the women’s basketball season off and running with four games since last Friday. She had eight points and six assists against Alderson-Broaddus, four assists against Cedarville and seven points and seven rebounds against West Liberty, all wins for ODU.

Ellie Cain, Lehman — Cain plays for Tennessee-Martin in volleyball, and had 53 assists, 14 digs and six kills in a 3-2 win over Tennessee Tech this week.
