Minster girls suffer first setback

MINSTER — The Minster girls suffered their first setback of the season Tuesday night in non-league basketball action, losing a tight game to visiting St. Marys 49-47.

The loss left the Lady Wildcats at 6-1 on the season heading into the McDonald’s Holiday Classic at Lima Bath starting Tuesday night. They will play the host team, with Lima Catholic and Oak Harbor the other semifinal.

Minster appeared to be in control against St. Marys, jumping to a 16-9 lead after a quarter and holding a 32-23 lead at the half. It was still a five-point lead after three periods but the Lady Wildcats managed only six in the final quarter, allowing the Lady Roughriders to rally back and steal a victory.

St. Marys hit three of its five three-point field goals in the final period.

Minster had three players in double figures, led by Hannah Schmitmeyer with 12. Rosie Westerbeck and Courtney Prenger added 10 points apiece.

Bremen 65, Lehman 31

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen was too much for visiting Lehman in girls basketball action Tuesday at Bremen, the final being 65-31.

The win put Bremen at 7-3 overall with Houston coming to town on Monday. Lehman dips to 4-5 on the season and travels to Jackson Center next Wednesday.

Lehman was unable to hit double figures in any quarter until the final one, and by that time the Lady Cardinals were well on their way, leading 50-21.

Four Lady Cardinals finished in double figures in scoring. Paige Jones hit three three-pointers on her way to 16 points, and Alyce Clune, Jane Homan and Debbie Paul all had 12 points apiece. Paul was 6-for-7 from the free throw line, and Jones just missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. She and Clune also had five assists and four steals each.

Brooke McIver was hot from long range for Lehman. She led the Lady Cavs in scoring with nine, coming on three three-pointers.

New Bremen canned 22-for-54 from the field for 40 percent and held Lehman to just 12-for-42, 28 percent from the floor. The Lady Cardinals were impressive from the foul line, dropping in 15 of 19 for 78 percent.
