TROY — The No. 2-seeded and unbeaten Sidney Lady Jackets got off to a great start and rolled to a 72-56 victory over Miamisburg in the first round of the Troy Division 1 Sectional Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday at Troy High School.

The Lady Jackets are now 23-0 and need only get by Piqua Wednesday at 6 p.m. to reach the sectional championship. Sidney owns two wins over Piqua this season by a combined 75 points (52-18 and 60-19).

Sidney’s all-time scoring leader Sylvia Hudson went wild in the opening quarter, pouring in 14 points to get the Lady Jackets out to a 21-9 lead after one.

I was pleased with both the inside and outside play today. Carrie Nuss stepped up and hit four three-pointers, and Sylvia and Celena Taborn were strong inside and combined for 46 points.

“Kaitlyn Davis did an excellent job defensively on Miamisburg’s Rylie Parkhurst, allowing her only 13 points. And she (Davis) also had 11 points and five assists,” Mummey went on. “Overall, the girls came out and played hard and I’m super proud of the way they have carried themselves this year. The atmosphere was impressive. It felt like a home game for us. We’re all very thankful for all the support we’ve received this season.”
