Russia softball earns 2 lopsided wins in Newton Cancer Classic

TROY — Eight walks hurt Sidney in a 6-1 loss to Troy in a Miami Valley League crossover game on Friday at Market Street Field.

The Yellow Jackets outhit the Trojans 4-3, but Troy drew eight walks compared to four by Sidney. Five stolen bases helped the Trojans move runners.

Mitchell Davis was charged with the loss for Sidney (9-5, 8-4 MVL Valley Division). He pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run on one hit and five walks walks while striking out two batters.

Aiden Booth hit one double for Sidney, which struck out nine times against Troy’s Trayce Mercer.

Sidney committed two errors, while Troy committed one.

Houston 7, Covington 4 extra innings

The Wildcats won a nonconference game on Friday in Covington.

Houston scored one run in the sixth to tie it 3-3, then scored three runs in the eighth to earn the win.

Ryan Ely picked up the win for Houston (5-7). He pitched the eighth and struck out two batters while walking one. Jacob Leist started and pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six batters.

Xavier Ludwig was 3 for 5 with two doubles for Houston while Leist was 2 for 3 with one walk and two runs. Ian Arnold was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Devin Barker hit one double.

Houston had 12 hits and committed two errors. Covington had six hits and committed two errors.

Versailles 12, Anna 7 extra innings

The Tigers scored five runs in the top of the ninth to run away and earn a nonconference win on Friday in Anna.

Ethan Stover was 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs, one home run, one double and one walk for Versailles (7-4). Jacob Treon was 3 for 5 with one walk while Joe Ruhenkamp was 2 for 4 with two walks. Chase McEldowney was 1 for 2 with two walks, one double and four runs.

Grant Albers was 2 for 5 for Anna (1-11). Noah Aufderhaar hit one double and batted in three runs.

Pitching statistics were not reported.

Versailles had 12 hits and committed three errors. Anna had five hits and didn’t commit any errors.

Arcanum 3, Russia 2

Russia lost a nonconference game on Friday in Arcanum.

Bryson Sharp hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Trojans to victory.

Ross Fiessinger was charged with the loss for Russia (7-4). He pitched 1 2/3 inning and gave up one earned run on two hits and one walk. Hayden Quinter started and gave up two earned runs on seven hits in five innings.

Aiden Shappie was 2 for 3 and Grant Saunders was 2 for 3.

Russia had seven hits and committed one error while Arcanum had nine hits and committed one error.

Marion Local 5, Jackson Center 2

The Tigers lost a nonconference game on Friday in Jackson Center.

Blake Noble was charged with the loss for the Tigers (5-6). He pitched two innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Carson Regula was 2 for 3.

Jackson Center had four hits and committed one error. Marion Local had eight hits and committed three errors.

Lima Perry 11, Botkins 1

The Trojans lost a nonconference game in five innings on Friday in Botkins.

Carson Motter was charged with the loss. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits and one walk.

Motter hit one double.

The Trojans managed two hits against Lima Perry’s Ryan Yingst and struck out 13 times.

Botkins committed two errors. The Commodores had 10 hits and committed one error.

Ansonia 16, Fairlawn 0

The Jets lost a nonconference game in five innings on their home field on Friday.

Kylin Withrow was charged with the loss for Fairlawn (0-11). He pitched six innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits and four walks.

The Jets didn’t manage a hit but drew three walks. They committed three errors. The Tigers had 12 hits and committed two errors.

Newton 9, Lehman Catholic 7

The Cavaliers lost a nonconference game on Friday in Pleasant Hill.

Colin Potts was charged with the loss for Lehman (2-9). He pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out one better.

Koban Schmiesing was 2 for 4 with one double for the Cavaliers while Seth Knapke was 2 for 3. Ethan Stiver hit one double.

Lehman had nine hits and committed two errors while Newton had 10 hits and committed one error.

Riverside 3, Miami East 2

The Pirates won a Three Rivers Conference game on Friday in De Graff.

Warren Shockey picked up the win for the Pirates (6-4, 4-3 TRC). He pitched a complete game and gave up four hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Both of Miami East’s runs were unearned.

Gavin Osborne was 3 for 3 for Riverside while Landon Purtee was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases.

Riverside had seven hits and committed one error. Miami East committed three errors.

Lincolnview 6, New Bremen 0

The Cardinals lost a nonconference game on Friday in New Bremen.

Reece Busse was charged with the loss for New Bremen (6-4). He pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

New Bremen had three hits and committed four errors. Lincolnview had eight hits and committed one error.

Troy 14, Sidney 1

The Yellow Jackets lost a Miami Valley League crossover game in seven innings on Friday in Sidney.

Alli Milanese was charged with the loss for Sidney (2-11, 2-10 MVL Valley Division). She pitched four innings and gave up five earned runs on 13 hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

Tylee Hale was 1 for 2 with one home run for the Yellow Jackets while Nylah Hale was 1 for 2.

Troy had eight hits and didn’t commit an error. Sidney had four hits and committed five errors.

Russia 10, Newton 0

The Raiders, which are ranked No. 1 in Division IV in this week’s state coaches association poll, scored five runs in the fourth inning to earn a run-rule victory in their first game in Newton’s Cancer Classic on Friday in Pleasant Hill.

Makena Hoying picked up the win for Russia (13-0). She pitched five innings and gave up three hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

Hoying was 3 for 3 with one double while Riley Hammonds was 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and Jaela Shappie was 2 for 3 with one double and one walk. Reese Goubeaux hit one double and batted in three runs. Kelby Doseck was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and one walk. Cece Borchers and Saige Hoying were each 1 for 2.

Russia had 12 hits and committed one error. Newton didn’t commit any errors.

Russia 13, Franklin-Monroe 1

The Raiders won their second game in Newton’s Cancer Classic in five innings on Friday in Pleasant Hill.

Russia scored 10 runs in the fourth to earn the run-rule win.

Sophie Francis picked up the win in the circle. She pitched five innings and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Reese Goubeaux was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and two doubles while Saige Hoying was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and Cece Borchers was 2 for 3. Ava Daniel and Simone Puthoff were each 1 for 2. Puthoff drew one walk and stole two bases. Kelby Doseck was 1 for 2 with one walk.

Russia had 11 hits and committed one error. The Jets committed three errors.

Anna 5, Allen East 3

The Rockets won a nonconference game on Friday in Anna.

Bree Metzler picked up the win in the circle for Anna (9-4). She pitched a complete game and gave up one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out one batter.

Taylor Dye hit one double for the Rockets. Brenna Cobb was 0 for 1 with three walks and four stolen bases while Liz Staudter was 0 for 2 with two walks and two stolen bases.

Anna had three hits and committed three errors. Allen East had four hits and committed one error.

Bradford 11, Houston 2

The Wildcats lost a nonconference game on Friday in Houston.

Peyton New was charged with the loss for Houston (3-8). She pitched seven innings and gave up four earned runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

New was 2 for 3 with one double. Megan Maier was 1 for 2. Rylie Voisard hit one home run and had 2 RBIs.

Houston had five hits and committed three errors. Bradford didn’t commit an error.

Marion Local 10, Jackson Center 0

The Tigers lost a nonconference game in seven innings on Friday in Jackson Center.

Grace Woolley was charged with the loss for Jackson Center (4-6). She pitched seven innings and gave up four earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out two batters.

McKinley Reichert was 2 for 4 with one double.

Jackson Center had three hits and committed four errors. Marion Local didn’t commit any errors.

Covington 6, New Bremen 4

The Cardinals lost a nonconference game on Friday in Covington.

Alayna Ross was charged with the loss for New Bremen (3-10). She pitched six innings and gave up one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.

Ella Pape was 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Cardinals while Sarah Dwenger was 3 for 4, Ross was 2 for 4 and Lydia Bushman was 2 for 4.

New Bremen had 12 hits and committed four errors. Covington committed two errors.

Franklin-Monroe 11, Versailles 8

The Tigers lost their first game in Newton’s Cancer Classic on Friday in Pleasant Hill.

Colleen Hiestand was charged with the loss for Versailles (9-6). She pitched five innings and gave up eight earned runs on nine hits and six walks while striking out two batters.

Tara Fritscher was 3 for 4 with one double while Jenna Dirksen was 2 for 4 with one double and Mia Eversole was 2 for 3. Hiestand was 1 for 2 with 4 RBIs, one home run and one walk.

Versailles had 10 hits and committed three errors. The Jets had 10 hits and committed two errors.

The Tigers won their second game in Newton’s Cancer Classic in six innings on Friday in Pleasant Hill.

Tara Fritscher picked up the win in the circle. She pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven batters.

Cassie Leach was 3 for 4 with one double, Lydia Hecht was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and one double, Fritscher was 2 for 4 with one double, Natalie Prenger was 2 for 4, Emma George was 2 for 3 with one walk, Mia Eversole was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Salem Leach was 1 for 2 with one double and one walk. Jenna Dirksen hit one double.

Versailles had 16 hits and gave up one error. Newton didn’t commit any errors.
