PITSBURG — Anna clamped down defensively on Preble Shawnee in the second half, but the Lady Rockets never got going on offense, and dropped a 39-32 verdict in Division 3 Sectional semifinal action at Franklin-Monroe Thursday night.
The setback ends the Lady Rockets’ season at 11-13.
“Preble Shawnee is a very nice team,” said Anna coach Doug Martin. “And for being a young team with four sophomores starting, they played well. We played good defense in holding them to only 13 points in the second half, but we just couldn’t get anything going offensively. We missed too many easy buckets and when you can’t score, you don’t win.”
Anna trailed 26-14 at the half, but shaved six points off that margin with a good third quarter at both ends of the floor. But that was as close as they could get.
Macey Huelskamp led Anna in scoring with 12.
“I was proud of the girls this year,” said Martin. “We suffered some major injuries to key personnel, which gave some of our younger players opportunities to get valuable experience. We played a very tough schedule and they all worked very hard for every game. And that’s all a coach can ask for. Our JV team finished 20-2 so the future is bright.”
Anna (32) — Huelskamp 12, Kauffman 8, Kuck 6, Scully 2, Noll 2, Aufderhaar 2.
Shawnee (39) — Sims 17, Woodard 8, Lovely 6, Hollan 6, Campbell 2.
Score by quarters:
Three-pointers: Anna 3 (Kuck 2, Huelskamp); Shawnee 7 (Sims 3, Woodard 2, Lovely 2).
Records: Anna 11-13, Shawnee 11-12.
