Lady Jackets

blank Piqua

SIDNEY — The Sidney girls soccer team broke away from a scoreless tie at the half to take care of archrival Piqua in action Wednesday night at the high school, the final being 4-0.

The win put Sidney at 1-1 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference North and 7-2-1 overall. Piqua is 1-1 and 3-7.

The Lady Jackets return to action Monday at home against Beavercreek.

“We dominated the game, but we couldn’t get a shot to go, so it was sitting at 0-0 at the half,” said Sidney coach Stacey Goffena. “We had a few breakaways and one free kick hit off the post, but we couldn’t convert. Finishing has definitely been our biggest issue this year. We’re possessing well and finding people we need to find, but we are not finding the back of the net. I told the girls at the half they had to finish. They needed to focus mentally and give a better effort when going to the goal. And the second half was a much different story.”

The first goal of the game came just seven minutes into the second half when a ball bounced from the goal and Elaine Wiesenmayer took the outside shot for the finish.

Six minutes later, the Lady Jackets found Shelby Baker making a run on the outside. She sent a cross into Ashley Egan, who finished for a 2-0 lead.

At the 19-minute mark, Emily Wiesemayer found sister Elaine for another goal from the outside, and the final goal came from Macie Ivey, who took the ball from a defender and dribbled through a few Piqua players for a goal.

“The goal by Macie was very impressive,” said the coach. “For a freshman to take a ball with speed and dribble around defensive players and then finish the shot, that’s really something to see. She plays with great confidence for a freshman and I think she’s going to do some great things during her career at Sidney.”

The Lady Jackets also won the junior varsity game by a 2-1 final.
