Knasel earns Player of the Week honors

Sidney High School graduate Morgan Knasel, a sophomore forward on the Mount St. Joseph women’s soccer team is having an excellent season so far.

Last week, she led the Lady Lions to a pair of conference wins, and for her efforts, she was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week.

She scored a goal and added an assist in MSJ’s 3-1 win at Transylvania, and then scored all three goals for her team in a 3-0 win over Defiance.

On the season, she is the team leader in goals scored with eight, has two assists, and is second on the team in shots-on-goal with 30.

The team stands at 10-5-1 on the year.

Andrea Thobe, Lehman — Thobe, the “quarterback” of the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team in Wheeling, W. Va., has been named the Mountain East Conference Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

She is the reigning MEC Player of the Year, and led the No. 7-ranked Lady Cardinals to a 3-0 week against Clarion, and league foes Shepherd and Fairmont State. All three games were 3-0.

She totaled 119 assists, seven kills without an error in 15 attacks for a .467 percentage, served four aces, had 26 digs and seven block assists in the three games. She had 39 assists against Clarion, 35 and 14 digs against Shepherd and 45 assists against Fairmont State, her ninth 40-plus assist match of the season.

In her latest game, meanwhile, she had 46 assists and 10 digs in a 3-0 win over West Liberty.

Meg Reineke, New Knoxville — Reineke averaged an amazing 30 kills for Sinclair in two matches this week, wins over Lakeland and Columbus State, both by 3-2 scores.

She had 31 kills and 37 digs against Lakeland and 29 kills and 30 digs against Columbus State.

Ashley Pleiman, Fort Loramie — Pleiman, a 6-foot-2 freshman for the talented volleyball team at Owens Community College in Perrysburg, made her debut this week, bringing to an end a forced layoff due to an injury in preseason. She helped Owens (31-5) to a pair of 3-0 wins, with five kills against Columbus State and six kills and two solo blocks against Clark State.

Kelly Turner, Fort Loramie — Turner continues to become more and more of a key player for Northern Kentucky’s volleyball team. In action this week, she had 10 kills in a 3-1 win over Illinois-Chicago, 11 kills in a 3-2 win over Wright State, and six kills in a 3-0 win over Valparaiso.

Brett Bey, Versailles — Bey had a big game for Columbus State this week in volleyball action against Lorain County. In the 3-2 win, she had six kills, 45 assists, 11 digs and three blocks.

Amanda Winner, Versailles — Winner had nine kills for Findlay in a 3-0 win over Ferris State in volleyball.

Taylor Winner, Versailles — Winner is a freshman middle hitter at Northwestern Ohio in Lima and had a good week in volleyball. She had seven kills against Spring Arbor, five against Point Park and 10 against Rochester, all 3-0 wins.

Joe Fuller, Lehman — Fuller helped St. Leo’s of Florida to the Sunshine State Conference championship last week in cross country. He placed 21st overall in 26:37.1.

Julie Hoying, Fort Loramie — Hoying had another good week for Marion University of Indianapolis in volleyball. She finished with 42 assists in a 3-0 win over St. Mary of the Woods, and 41 assists and seven digs in a 3-1 loss to Huntington.

Ashley Borchers, Russia — Borchers continued her excellent play in volleyball at Ohio Northern. She had nine kills, 39 assists and eight digs in a 3-1 win over Muskingum, and three kills, 32 assists and 11 digs in a 3-0 win over Baldwin-Wallace.

Claire Heitkamp, Marion Local — Heitkamp also plays for Ohio Northern, and she pounded out 13 kills in the win over Baldwin-Wallace this week.

Rachel Noffsinger, Anna — Noffsinger had a couple of good games for Tennessee-Martin this week in volleyball action. She had 11 kills in a 3-1 loss to Belmont, and 10 kills in a 3-2 loss to Tennessee State.

Ellie Cain, Lehman — Cain is a teammate of Noffsinger’s at Tennessee Martin and had 41 assists and five digs against Belmont, and 54 assists and 10 digs against Tennessee State.

Tori Thompson, Riverside — Thompson had a huge game for Ohio Dominican in a 3-1 loss to Michigan Tech, finishing with 21 kills, 17 digs and two aces. She also had 15 digs in a win over Northern Michigan.

Lauren Roetgerman, Minster — Roetgerman finished with six kills and two aces in a 3-2 win over Lakeland. She plays for Sinclair.
