SIDNEY — The Sidney Daily News has announced the sponsors of prizes for its annual cooking contest.

The grand prize winner will take home a $300 cash prize, thanks to Clancy’s, which has also sponsored the Party Pleasers category prize.

Winners in each of six categories will take home $50 cash prizes. Ohio Living Dorothy Love has sponsored the Desserts category. Flint’s TV & Appliance is the sponsor of the Main Dishes category. The prize for the best of the Versatile Veggies category is The Window Guy. Wilson Health supported the prize in the Fruits & Nuts category. Sidney and Troy Carstar selected the Fish & Game category to sponsor.

The popular cook-off to determine the contest winners will be Sept. 30.

Home cooks and bakers may submit recipes in six categories for inclusion in the 2017 Sidney Daily News Harvest Holiday Cookbook, which will be distributed in the Nov. 18 edition of the Sidney Daily News and available for purchase after that date.

Four finalists in each category will be asked to prepare their dishes for expert judges to sample at the Crossroads in Hardin during the cook-off.

Cooks may enter up to three recipes in each of the six categories. All recipes must be typed or legibly hand-printed. Illegible entries will be discarded. Entries must include the names of the dishes, the categories they’re submitted in, complete lists of ingredients and instructions, and the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of the submitters.

Cooks who want their recipes included in the cookbook, but who do not want to compete in the contest, should so indicate on their submissions.

Emailed recipes are preferred and can be sent to [email protected]. Recipes in hard copy can be mailed or delivered to the Sidney Daily News, 1451 N. Vandemark Road, Sidney, OH 45365. Recipes will be accepted until 5 p.m., Sept. 1.

The categories are as follows:

• Main dishes: meats, casseroles, soups — the entrees that anchor a meal.

• Versatile veggies: Good cooks know they’re not just for side dishes anymore. Side dish and salad recipes welcome, but so are recipes for veggies as the main course or as breakfast or as a great snack. Surprise us with their versatility.

• Fish and game: From your favorite everyday tuna salad to something as exotic as stewed bear, this is where to submit your recipes for seafood, freshwater fish, venison, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, quail, crawdads, or whatever else you catch or hunt.
• Party pleasers: Snacks and treats that you can eat with your fingers. Salty or sweet, hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, petit fours or candies. All recipes for finger foods welcome here.
• Desserts: Pies, cakes, cookies, puddings, gelatins, ice cream — it’s just not a meal without something yummy to top it off.

• Fruits and nuts: Recipes for any dish in which a fruit or nut (or a combination of them) is the main ingredient or the dominant flavor. Could be a snack, a dessert, a main dish, a salad. Tempt us with something tasty from the trees.

Each sponsor will name a category judge and Gary Strasser, manager of Clancy’s; Teresann McIntire, part-time chef and manager of Buffalo Jack’s in Covington; and Mojalefa Jacob Moremi, culinary director of LanePark in Sidney, will assess all cookoff entries and select the grand prize winner.
