MRC seeks volunteers

SIDNEY — Because of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, several new government programs have been instituted, the Patriot Act, increased security at airports, and Homeland Security are just a few. One new program many may not know is the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).

“In the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, thousands of Americans responded by volunteering their skills and talents to help others. During his 2002 State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush called on all Americans to make a commitment to serve their communities, the nation, and the world. The Medical Reserve Corps is a component that brings local health professionals and others with any relevant skills,” said Kathy Cavinder, RN, BSN of the Shelby County Health Department.

In 2004 Shelby County was given a grant to establish an MRC program in conjunction with Montgomery, Darke, Preble, Miami, Champaign, Greene, Clark, and Shelby Counties. This has made it possible for there to be a larger pool from which to draw should a disaster occur in these areas.

“There are now 206,573 registered volunteers. Shelby County currently has 17 volunteers,” said Cavinder.

The MRC was called on during the N1H1 flu epidemic in 2009. The MRC was able to call on its volunteers to handle the number of people who participated in the flu clinic held by the Shelby County Health Department.

“During the mass inoculation of the H1N1 virus, our volunteers assisted with the mass flu clinic. The provided trafficking outside, people traffic inside, registration, and paperwork,” said Cavinder.

On March 15, 2018, an informational meeting will be held at the Health Department in Sidney at 4-6 p.m. to educate people who would like to volunteer for the MRC.

Volunteers must be currently able to serve in this area and be willing to keep their certification current.

“MRC volunteers may include those in training, in active practice, or retired. Medical and public health professionals are needed. Persons with no health experience who can help with communications, administration, logistics, and other essential functions are also needed.

Anyone interested may contact Cavinder at 837-498-7251 or by email at [email protected].

The Shelby County Health Department is located at 202 W. Poplar St.

Family Readiness is also an important aspect of being prepared for an emergency. In order to respond to an event, you and your family must be prepared for a disaster. Your family should have:

• A family communication plan

• An evacuation plan
