‘Smooth’ first day of school for Sidney

SIDNEY — The first day of school for students in Sidney City Schools was “extremely smooth” Superintendent John Scheu told board members during their Monday night meeting.

He said there there were no problems with transportation and busing and all the students made it to their classrooms. The eclipse, he said, also played a role in the first day of school.

“There was a lot of excitement,” said Scheu. “There were also distractions because of it. But it was a great learning experience for the students.”

Scheu also commended Jerry Harmon, business manager, and Jason McLain, food service director, for their hard work in getting the schools ready for the new year.

“All of the buildings are in tip, top shape,” said Scheu when he thanked Harmon.

“The high school cafeteria has new tables and chairs. It has a ‘wow’ factor. There are also some new menu choices for the students,” said Scheu of McLain’s work over the summer.

The staffing for the district was completed Monday night when the BOE hired Hilary Davis as a science teacher, effective Aug. 16. She will be paid $42,075 for her one-year contract.

The board also employed Megan Gallaway, Regina Hunsucker, Michael VanBrocklin and Valerie Cook as substitute teachers at $90 per day; Carrie Watkins, substitute aide, $11.34 per hour; Lezlie Sullenberger, substitute cook, $9.77 per hour; and Fallis Wilkerson Jr., substitute custodian, $13.59 per hour.

Parent liaisons were also hired at $12.59 per hour. Hired were Joan Holliday, Longfellow Elementary; April Bogart, Emerson Elementary; Jael Wethington, Whittier Elementary; and Bridget Stewart, Northwood Elementary. Parent liaisons is a requirement if a school is a Title I building.

In other business, the board:

• Accepted a bid from Cotterman and Company for partial replacement of the Northwood roof at $149,000.

• Approved the purchase of one school bus through the EPC at a cost not to exceed $100,000.

• Approved a purchased service contract with Theresa Kirsch for speech therapy services at $200 pr day on an as-needed basis.

• Approved the revisions in the OASBO Section 457 Plan.

• Approved a contract with the Nicholas School, Piqua, for special education for one student at a cost of $95 per day and related services costs of $75 per hour for occupational therapy and $70 per hour for speech therapy.

• Approved the bus stops for the 2017-18 school year. The transportation coordination has the right to revise the bus stops during the school year as necessary.

• Appointed psychologists Melissa Welch and Ashley Wiley as district representatives for ETR/IEP meetings.

The board’s next meeting will be Monday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. at the board office.
