Businesses honored for Career Center support

PIQUA — Four businesses have been recognized by the Ohio School Boards Association and Upper Valley Career Center for their contributions to student education. The announcement was made at the May meeting of the Upper Valley Career Center Board of Education meeting.

Ferguson Construction, Giacomo’s Salon and Spa, Miami County Parks District and Sidney/Troy CARSTAR received the OSBA Business Honor Roll awards. The awards will be presented individually by Career Center Superintendent Dr. Nancy Luce and her staff. The awards highlight some of the partnerships that are critical to the success of the Career Center programs and students.

The resignations of Abby Frilling, Family and Consumer Science, Piqua; Stephanie Gray-Johnson, Academic Supervisor, and Keri Lovelace, English instructor, were all accepted.

The board approved the non-renewal of contracts for Stacy Stang, Culinary paraprofessional; and Audrey Gillespie, Adult Customized Training, pre-employment and talent coordinator.

Contracts for various employees were awarded during the meeting. Barb Wagner, Adult Division director, was given a cabinet member contract from July 1, 2015 to June 20, 2020.

Timothy Cordonnier received an administrative contract as an academic/instructional supervisor. He will be paid $85,355 and his contract is for Aug. 1, 2015, to June 30, 2017.

Certificated contracts were given to Amanda Grear, Pre-engineering Technologies, Troy Junior Hgh, $61,866; Joe Karafit, social studies, prorated $42,608; Gregory Koth, Pre-engineering Technologies, $37,719; Taylor Jacobs, Information Technologies, Sidney High School, $39,828; and Jessica Sommer, Family and Consumer Science instructor, Bradford High School, $39,828.

Extended two-day contracts were awarded to Amdan Grear, Joe Karafit, Jeremy Kettering, Gregory Koth, Taylor Jacobs, Jessica Sommer and Roger Voisard.

Supplemental contracts for 40 days were awarded to Amanda Grear, Timothy Cordonnier, Jeremy Kettering, Gregory Koth, Taylor Jacobs, Jessica Sommer and Roger Voisard. Joe Karafit received a 25-hour supplemental contract.

Randall Sears received a one-year contract for the media/technology specialist for the 2015-16 school year. He will be paid $47,197.

One-year contracts were awarded to Tricia Alexander, Family and Consumer Science, Fort Loramie satellite; Shane Dixon, Career Based Intervention, Troy High School satellite; Derek McCracken, Ag Science, Hardin-Houston satellite; Margarte Odle, Special Education-English; and Gail Young, Family and Consumer Science, Covington satellite.

Classified two-year contracts were awarded to Mark Bell, custodial assistant; Brenda Ciribassi, Adult Building assistant/receptionist/ABLE secretary; Joe Karafit, paraprofessional, Manufacturing and Machining, 3/8 time; Kenneth Rank, paraprofessional, Electrical Trades, 4 hours per day; Ed Seger, paraprofessional, Ag and Power Technologies, 4 hours per day; and Denny Schoenleben, building services foreman.

Classified continuing contracts were awarded to Jo Bolton, cafeteria worker; William Clark, bus driver; Heidi Heuing, secretrary, student services; Denise March, benefits assistant; Marcy Roll, EMIS coordinator; Janet Stewart, cafeteria worker; and Jennelle Winn, parapgoressional, Medical Technology.

Adult Education contracts were awarded to David Barth, Susan Barth, Christopher Dunn, Paul Meyer, John Mingus and Todd Speelman. They will each be paid $22 in the Workforce Development program.

Anita Segreti was hired as Camp Excel instructor. Receving Camp Excel stipends will be David Briggs, Meredith Fiely, Frank Harris, John Kreitzer, Rick Lehnart, Sara Plozay, Anita Segreti, Frank Segreti and Jim Weaver, all instructors who will receive $500 each; Cindy Mikolajewski, nurse, $500; and Andrew Snyder and Tony Trapp, co-directors, $1,000 each.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the restoration of the Cosmetology paraprofessional position to 100 percent full-time position. The contract of Phyllis Stoll will be increased to 100 percent of authorized compensation effective for the 2015-16 school year.

• Approved a resolution of commendation for service award recipients.

• Approved salary modifications for Matt Stager and Tony Trapp.

• Approved Lisa Weeks as a volunteer for the 2014-15 school year.

• Approved the 5-year forecast.

• Approved the updated permanent appropriations resolution and certificate of estimated resources.

• Approved various purchase orders for programs at Troy and Piqua high and junior high schools.

• Approved grants from the Miami County Grant Foundation, $4,999 for purchase of Chromebook carts; Adult Education Opportunity Pilot Grant for $42,850 for development and planning of grant and travel reimbursement; and Adult Education Logistics IWA Grant for $10,000.

• Approved various donations.

• Approved a donation of a lathe and mill to Russia Locals School District Board of Education.

• Approved the 2015-16 renewal of the agreement with the Warren County Career Center for the Electrical Power Line Mechanic Program.

• Approved out-of-district learning experience/out-of-state travel for Ralph Ash, Design and Digital Print Technologies instructor, and Tami Yahl, Medical Technologies instructor, and students Alisha Bell, Design and Digital Print Technologies, and Dale Garber, HVAC, to attend the Skills USA Championships and National Leadership Conference from June 22-26 in Louisville, Kentucky. The cost for travel, registration, lodging, food and miscellaneous expenses will not exceed $6,150.

• Approved textbooks for the 2015-16 school year.

• Approved the annual renewal of property fleet and liability coverage in the amount of $54,695.

• Approved the annual renewal of student accident insurance in the amount of $6,256.

• Approved holding a special meeting on July 30 at 8 a.m. in the Adams Board Room at the school. The purchase of the meeting and public hearing will be to consider the re-employment of Beverly Holthaus as GRADS instructor. She retired as the GRADS instructor and is seeking to be re-employed by the district.

• Approved the 2015-16 salary schedules.

The board’s next meeting will be Monday, June 22, at 6 p.m in the Adams Board Room.
