SIDNEY — The Fairlawn FFA held their Annual Farm Day on the school grounds this year on Tuesday, May 5. The purpose of this activity is to educate tomorrow’s consumers about the importance of where their food comes from.

Farm Day is an event that our FFA Chapter holds for students in grades Pre-K through 5. First members had the Petting Zoo station. The kids put together a craft of the lifecycle of a chicken. They also got to see a pony, three sheep, two goats, two chickens, a pig and a calf. While getting to see and pet these animals they also learned new facts about each one.

The next station was in the greenhouse. The first activity that we did was ask the kids what parts of the flower they knew and what a flower needs to grow. Then the kids put together a craft with the parts of a flower, and planted seeds in cups of soil. After they had been introduced to the parts of the flower, we played “Simon Says” but with the parts of a flower.

The following station was at the creek with a very involved community member, Lynda Adams. She does various events with our chapter and helps us out a lot. At the creek, kids learned about run off and why it is important to keep our water clean.

At the Milk-a-Cow station, students got to milk a real cow, and also learned various facts about the cow that another one of our involved community members, Donna Sue Greiwe. At the ATV and Farm Safety Station, kids got to learn about how to stay safe around farm equipment. Some of these kids had never even see an ATV before and found it surprising that you aren’t allowed to drive one on the road.

The next station that we had was a Bill Nye the science guy movie on agriculture. The movie educated kids on agriculture and farming. Lastly, we had a plastic station. At the plastic station, students added together various ingredients such as Borax and Cornstarch. After following instructions from their leaders, they ended up with a rubber bouncy ball. Students also learned about how plastic is made up.

The day was a great success and the students learned a lot of information from the stations.
