Jacob Munk of Loramie township, was in Sidney today. Mr. Munk is a strawberry raiser. This year he says on account of the cold rainy weather the berries all ripened about the same time. Monday of this week, he picked 960 quarts on three-quarters of an acre.

Clem Partington has started a jitney bus service in this city. He has two automobiles. He will carry passengers anywhere in the city for five cents, and will make drives into the county for parties who desire.

Chief of Police O’Leary said this morning that charges of highway robbery would probably be filed against four Dayton people, two men and two women, after they held up Lon Stockstill about 10 0’clock last night. The four were apprehended by Patrolman Russell Neal and Kenneth Bothel, special radio equipment man, after Stockstill furnished police a description of the car carrying Tennessee licenses in which the quartet fled. They were taken into custody near the Miami river bridge south of Sidney on the Dixie highway.

Mayor John Sexauer officially opened the night softball leagues at Harmon field last evening when he tossed up the first ball to be pitched under the newly-acquired lighting system. Sheriff Pitts took a healthy cut and sent it screaming between right short and second base for the first hit of the 1940 season. Fritz Cook was behind the plate. Seats in the stands were filled to capacity for the first games.

Sidney’s new Soap Box Derby champion will be crowned Sunday afternoon at the foot of William A. Ross Derby Hill as 41 boys compete for the right to represent Sidney in the International Soap Box Derby in Akron on Aug. 14.In addition the local winner will receive a $500 savings bond from Chevrolet, national sponsor. Director Henry Rumpff and his Jaycee assistants welcome the general public to this 11th running of the Sidney Soap Box Derby.

A Shelby county farm family was to become host today to a 28-year old Brazilian participant in the International Farm Youth Exchange program. Arriving at the home of William J. Joslin on Millcreek road was Olympio C. Moreira who lives on a 350-acre farm near Gioania-Goias in the South American country. He is a member of a family of five boys and three girls and is a native Portuguese.

Capt. Kathleen A. Hayes, a nurse in the U.S. Army Reserve, recently received the Army Physical Fitness Badge from Lt. Col. Robin Dunkle , officer-in-charge at the 2291st U.S. Army Hospital (V.A. Medical Center Dayton). Dunkle said Hayes received the badge for achieving a score of 297 out of a possible 300 on the Army Physical Fitness Test. Hayes resides in Sidney with her husband Michael and their two children. When not attending Army Reserve drills, Hayes works as a registered nurse at Wilson Memorial Hospital in the Home/Health/Hospice Care unit.

The Shelby County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities recently learned that a new record has been set for the number of participants at the adult workshops. S& H Products now has 88 employees compared to the previous record of 84 employees this spring said Dr. Robert Zimmerman, superintendent. One employee has started with Gilardi’.s Frozen Food full time recently.
