SIDNEY — Sidney, Fort Loramie and New Knoxville are readying activities for celebrations on and around the country’s 239th Independence Day.

Sidney

SIDNEY — The city of Sidney, Sidney Civic Band, and two local Relay for Life teams have scheduled activities for Saturday that will make Independence Day fun for area residents of all ages.

All events will be on the grounds behind Sidney High School, 1215 Campbell Road.

The A Family Affair Relay for Life team will host a cruise-in with registration beginning at 5 p.m. Cars of all types and vintages are welcome to show for a registration fee of $10. Trophies will be awarded and a 50/50 drawing will take place.

The group has been running a Little Miss and Mister Firecracker contest on its Facebook page. Parents can post photos of their children 5 and younger and collect money as “votes.” “Voting” will continue at the high school until 8 p.m. Photos of contestants will be on display there. The children whose photos have garnered the most money will be declared the winners. The winners will be announced at 8:30 p.m. All money raised will support the Shelby County Relay for Life’s contributions to the American Cancer Society.

The Relay For Life team from the Connection Point Church of God will be host its 11th annual Fourth of July ice cream social from 6 to 10 p.m.

In addition to frozen custard, hot dogs, hamburgers, pies, cookies, brownies, soft drinks, water and glow necklaces will be available for sale. The team will also sell glow necklaces for the children.

“We hope this year’s event will be our biggest ever,” said organizer Deb Kaufman.

A vintage baseball game between the Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers and the Sidney Rivermen will begin at 7 p.m. The game will follow the rules, language and dress of 1860s baseball.

The Sidney Civic Band will perform its weekly concert on the high school grounds instead of the courtsquare. The concert will begin at 8:30 p.m. and will continue through the fireworks, which are scheduled to begin at 10 p.m.

Attendees should take lawn chairs or blankets to sit on for all activities.

In case of inclement weather, Hits 105.5 radio will broadcast alternate plans.

Fort Loramie

FORT LORAMIE — The Fort Loramie Liberty Days festival has been scheduled for July 3 and 4 in the Fort Loramie Community Park. For more information, see Page 7.

Port Jefferson

Hussey’s Restaurant, 8760 Broad St., Port Jefferson, will present “After Midnight,” a band who performs a musical tribute to the 1970s, from 7 to 11 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. There is a $5 per person cover charge. The full bar will be open and a limited food menu will be available. Proceeds will benefit Shop with a Cop.

New Knoxville

NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville Independence Day activities will be July 3 and 4 in New Knoxville Community Park, 700 S. Main St.

Friday’s festivities begin a hot shot competition at 2 p.m. The food and beer tents open at 4 p.m. Happy hour will run until 6 p.m. The Friends of the Library book sale will be from 4 to 8 p.m. At 5 p.m., the park raffle, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction will be in the shelter house, the saw dust pile begins its runs, which will continue on the half hour until 7 p.m., a classic car cruise-in will exhibit until 8 p.m. and kids inflatables and a cake walk will continue until 9 p.m.

The Woody A. Piehl Wooden Bat Softball Tournament will begin at 6 p.m. Photos can be submitted for competition from 6 to 8 p.m. A 5K walk/run begins at 9 p.m. The 1988 Band will perform from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.

On Saturday, the softball tournament continues beginning at 9 a.m., the book sale continues from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the photo competition will accept submissions from 10 a.m. to noon and the pie contest will accept submission from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

At 11:15 a.m., Boy Scouts will perform a flag ceremony. The Way International Choir will perform at 11:30 a.m. The food tent will open at 11:30 a.m. Pie judging and pie auction, a corn hole tournament, a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction all take place at noon. The photos will be judged and exhibited in the gazebo at 1 p.m.

Kids’ inflatables and a cake walk will run from 1 to 9 p.m. The saw dust pile resumes on the half hour from 2 to 4 p.m. New Knoxville third-graders will take on New Bremen third-graders in a Little League game at 3 p.m. The fourth-graders will play at 5 p.m., the fifth- and sixth-graders, at 7 p.m. Reverse raffles will happen at 3 and 5 p.m. Happy hour in the beer tent will run from 3 to 5 p.m. and barbecue chicken dinner sales will start at 4 p.m.

Haywired will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight. American Legion Post No. 444 will present the national anthem at 9:45 p.m. and fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. Raffles and softball continue at 11 p.m.
