July 1, 1915

With some remodeling being contemplated upon the Presbyterian Church here, an auto party composed of the elders, trustees and other members of the church to the number of about 30, motored to Covington this afternoon to look over the Presbyterian Church there which has just been remodeled. The party planned to remain for the services this evening and hear Rev. John Montgomery, of Piqua, preach.

The music program played at the Piper Store last Saturday as a part of the store’s 16th business anniversary turned out to be such a success that Mr. Piper said today that similar concerts will be held in the future. These will be presented each Saturday evening between the hours of 7 and 9 o’clock at the store.

75 years

July 1, 1940

Robert Cook, cornetist, will be the soloist at the first summer band concert scheduled for Wednesday evening on the north side of the public square. The band will be under the direction of Wilbur Piper.

The change from Thursday to Wednesdays for the concerts this summer was made because of the large number of local stores closing Thursday afternoons during the summer months.

William E. Salm, who has been a student at the Cincinnati School of Embalming, has received word that he has passed the state board examination held in Columbus May 28. Following a brief vacation with his parents, he plans to return to school next week for a three month course of study, following which he will come to Sidney to be associated with his father and cousin in the operation of the Salm Undertaking establishment.

July 1, 1965

Two projects – one providing flood control for Sidney and the other a water conservation program with facilities for Shelby County – were outlined Thursday evening for city, county and state officials.

Both projects, one of which would result in the creation of a 1,500 acre lake, are the outgrowth of a survey made by the Flood Control and Conservation Committee of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce. The presentation was made by Frank Schlagetter, chairman of the committee.

Additional information relative to the bicycle races to be held as a part of the Independence Day celebration, were announced today by Glen Bruce, chairman of that phase of the activities. Scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the race track, the event will include races in seven different divisions, with awards in each division. A special prize will be a 10 speed bicycle valued at approximately $66.

Contract for installing a new heating plant at the Shelby County Children’s Home was awarded by county commissioners Thursday to the Rose Plumbing Co., Inc., West Milton, on its offer of $24,115.

July 1, 1990

It was the highlight of the summer. The Lake Loramie Improvement Association boat parade kicked off today. It was a parade Hawaiian style. The queens of the day were Cynthia Naseman of Anna and Regina Hunsucker of Sidney. A large crowd witnessed the parade.

The annual Fort Loramie parade was another huge success. Over 100 units took place in the fun event. Thousands lined the parade route.

It was a tragedy that is going to result in criminal charges. Two motorcyclists were killed at the corner of SR 29 and Scott Road. Arthur Schmidt will be charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. It is alleged he failed to yield the right of way.
