July 22, 1915

The county commissioners and prosecuting attorneys of Miami, Shelby and Clark counties met at the Miami County courthouse yesterday afternoon to consider the question of employment of an attorney and expert engineer to continue the fight in the courts against the reservoir plan of flood protection for the Miami Valley. David Oldham of Sidney was selected as chairman. An agreement was reached that an expert engineer be employed, his selection to be made by the engineers of Miami, Shelby and Clark counties.

The city of Piqua may soon be without local streetcar service as a result of the action taken by city council. After the Dayton and Troy Traction Co. advised council that the franchise approved several weeks ago was unacceptable, the legislative body immediately instructed the city solicitor to advise the traction company it was terminating the franchise within 30 days as provided in the temporary extension of the franchise.

July 22, 1940

Sidneyites, mopping their brows and cringing from sunburn, eyed the thin, little line in their thermometers today as it reached half way past the 94 degree mark to break all averages for any previous day this year. Meanwhile, the forecast for Ohio was fair and continued hot, with temperatures expected to remain near the 100 degree mark in many places in the state.

The work of dredging the Minster branch of Lake Loramie is now under way. The dredging program has been mapped to follow the old channel northward to the end of the state owned land. The route will then be changed to the east, going as far as State Route 119. Dredging of the channel has been sought by sportsmen’s organizations and farmers, along with the village, township and county officials in the area.

July 22, 1965

Members of the fire and rescue, police and radio units of the Shelby County Civil Defense Corps were seen recently in activity that centered around the Ernest Gerber farm, east of Botkins on Wednesday. Approximately 35 members of the units took part in the rescue operation in which Sidney Mumford was the “victim.” Mumford was “pinned” under a tree in the woods on the Gerber farm. Members of the CD units had to locate him, effect his rescue and then remove him from the scene. Radio communication was maintained from the CD headquarters in the basement of the Monumental Building.

Members of Sidney Post 217 of the American Legion have elected James Fulton, 319 Ruth St., as commander for the coming year. Other officers elected at the regular meeting of the Post and installed Tuesday night were: first vice commander, Donald Clinehens, 323 Grant St.; second vice commander, Charles Galate, Lynn St.; adjutant, Leonard Curtis, 405 S. Ohio Ave.; finance officer, Weldon Oakley, 425 E. South St.; treasurer, Robert Uncampher, 302 Grove St.

July 22, 1990

The JJ Jelks-Troy incident is now history. It did not end well. Jelks was found guilty by a jury of assault during a melee that erupted in a Sidney-Troy boys basketball game. He was sentenced to six months in jail by Judge Braun. The judge commented that Jelks “showed no remorse.” He also mentioned when Jelks saw a videotape of the incident, he commented, “That was not how it was.”

Sidney has a resident in the national Peace Corps. Mark Dunson will be leaving for Morocco. He will serve as a rural water engineer. The 1982 Lehman graduate is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Dunson. Mark also received a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Dayton.
