Only hitches at the fair were on the trailers

SIDNEY – The 2015 Shelby County Fair has come to a close.

Shelby County Fair Director Jerry Schaffner said the people who attended had a good time and overall it was a success.

He said they made some changes this year that were good, and some that weren’t, but they’ll work through all the complaints at their next fair board meeting so they can fix things for next year.

Schaffner said attendance was down a little bit, but that could have been a result of the weather. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures reached 90 degrees with more than 90 percent humidity, according to the National Weather Service. Monday and Wednesday each brought some precipitation.

Deputy Brian Strunk of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the nice weather at the end of the week added to the calm atmosphere the entire week had. He said they had no major problems and everything ran really well and right on schedule.

He said weather dictates everything and in this case the weather behaved, and so did everyone who attended the fair.

With poultry being banned from the fair, alternative projects were required for the 4-H kids who still wanted to participate.

The kids used a stuffed chicken and duck for the showmanship portion and presented poster projects instead of their actual birds. A bucket of chicken was auctioned off instead, and the proceeds were divided between the kids who couldn’t bring their birds.

All events went on as planned. Only a few delays occurred. Planning on next year’s fair will start at the fair board meeting on September 16.

The fair’s Facebook page posted this Saturday night: “Another fair has come to a close. Benches will be stored, barns will be cleaned, rides and vendors move to the next fair but our dedicated fair board sees this as the start of planning the 2016 Shelby County Fair!! We hope you enjoyed this year and look forward to seeing you next year!!”
