Smiths note golden date

SIDNEY — Jean and Norm Smith, of Sidney, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, Aug. 15, 2015, at a Mass in Holy Angels Catholic Church and a reception for family and friends in the Days Inn banquet room.

Norm and the former Jean Nienberg were married Sept. 4, 1965, in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Glandorf. Witnesses were maid of honor Nancy (Smith) Heebsh, sister of the bridegroom, best man Jack Nienberg, brother of the bride, Edna Nienberg, sister-in-law of the bride, Mona (Smith) Cleary, sister of the bridegroom, Katie (Deters) Jones, Mardie (Buddlemeyer) Inkrott, Mike Gagel, and Dennis Nienberg, Melvin Nienberg and Russ Nienberg, all brothers of the bride. The couple had met when they were students at the University of Dayton.

Norm is the son of the late Rita and Clarence Smith, of Tiffin. Jean is the daughter of the late Mildred and Tom Nienberg, of Glandorf.

The Smiths are the parents of four daughters and three sons-in-law, Tracy and Martin Langer, of St. Petersburg, Florida, Mindy and Brian Tyra, of Dayton, Molly and Jim Kane, of Cleveland, and Abbi Smith, of Dayton, and two sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Elizabeth Smith, of Dayton, and Matt and Kathy Smith, of Cincinnati. They have 14 grandchildren.

Norm practiced law in Sidney and was the probate/juvenile judge for 18 years. Jean worked with the youth program at Holy Angels Parish and served as its youth director for six years. They now volunteer for their church and in the community.

They enjoy reading, traveling, University of Dayton men’s basketball games and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Norm loves to play golf and Jean is an avid tennis player.
