The Sidney High girls tennis team competed in the Greater Western Ohio Conference Silver Flight tournament last weekend, and wound up fifth out of nine teams with 28 points.

Highlighting the tournament for Sidney was the performance of the second doubles team of Auanna Edens and Naomi Riegel, who knocked off the No. 1 seed on their way to placing second.

They won their first match 8-3 over West Carrollton, then upset top-seeded Larisa Schmitmeyer and Casey Malott of Greenville 8-6. Edens and Riegel were the No. 5 seed entering the tournament.

That victory put them in the championship against Ally Hesse and Alex Rabenstein of Fairmont, and the Sidney duo came out on the short end of an 8-3 score for runner-up honors.

Sidney had one other medal winner. Madison Frank at third singles finished in fourth place. Seeded fifth, she beat fourth-seeded Kyla Secrest of Fairborn 8-4 in her first action, then lost to Haely Kossel of Lebanon 8-6. She then lost to Molly Hunt of Greenville 8-2 in the match for third.

“Winning medals in this tournament is a huge accomplishment for those three girls,” said Sidney coach Emily Scheu.

At first singles, Desire Newton lost her first match to West Carrollton 8-3 and lost to a Xenia netter 8-0 in her second match.

At second singles, Marie Butts won her first match 8-2 over a Xenia opponent, then lost 8-3 to Fairmont. But she came back to beat a Wayne netter 8-3, then beat Hart of West Carrollton 8-3 in the match for fifth place.

The second doubles team of Hannah Brown and KatelynWheeler lost their first match 8-2 to Lebanon, but came back to beat Xenia 8-3. Then after losing 8-2 to Wayne, Sidney defeated Trotwood 8-2 for seventh place.

Fairmont was the silver flight champion, taking first in all five competitions.
