Oct. 21, 1915

A raid was made by sneak thieves on the automobiles of E.C. Nutt and Harry Forsyth while the vehicles had been left standing near the entrance to the school auditorium last night. The tire casing, rim and covering were stolen from the new Ford of Mr. Nutt, and three inner tubes were stolen from the rear of the Forsyth car. Police today were checking down some possible leads in the two thefts.

Officers were elected when members of the Reading Club were entertained yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Harrison Piper in her home on Grove street. Mrs. T.M. Miller was elected President, and Mrs. Harrison Piper, secretary and treasurer.

Oct. 21, 1940

Final preparations for their departure to Camp Shelby, Miss, were being made today by members of Co. I, 248TH Infantry, with their troop train scheduled to leave from the Baltimore and Ohio station at 1:45 a.m. tomorrow. Capt. Roscoe Stump said today that the company will make the 940 mile journey in sleeping cars, with officers occupying space in standard Pullmans and the enlisted men in tourist sleeping cars. A public reception and farewell for members of the local National Guard company will be held this evening in the American Legion rooms in the Monumental building. A parade from the Armory to the railroad station will get under way at 1:15 a.m. (Editor’s note: WWII was on the horizon. Most of these men would not see home again until the end of the war.)

The 1940 drive for funds for the Sidney Boy’s Club got under way in an impressive way at the kickoff dinner held last evening in the Boy’s Club rooms. More than 100 division leaders, captains and workers were present for the affair. Plans are to complete the campaign in four days.

James Wolfe, presiding minister of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sidney, announced today that the new Kingdom Hall located on Studevant road will be ready for dedication Nov. 6. The one-story brick front and cement block building is 58 feet long by 28 feet wide, centered on a three quarter acre lot. It consists of the main auditorium which has a seating arrangement for 90 persons, a reception entrance and cloak room and a literature counter. A 40-car parking area is also planned. The value of the Kingdom Hall is estimated at about $20,000.

Shelby county remained waterlogged today as rain continued to fall during the morning hours, but there was some relief in sight. Dave Fette, observer at the government cooperating weather station, reported 1.02 inches of precipitation in the 24-hour period up to 7 a.m. today. This brought the total rainfall for the month of October to 3.86 inches. This is 1.93 inches above the normal, according to Fette.

Francis (Potter) Anderson, a resident of Dorothy Love Retirement Community, is closely watching developments leading up to the Nov. 6 election, especially in regard to county issue four which would generate funds for the construction of a new jail. Mrs. Anderson, who holds the distinction of being the first Miss Sidney to reign over a festive parade, lived in the jail building while her first husband, William C. Dilbone, served as Shelby County Sheriff. “At the time I thought the whole experience was rather frightening. Now I consider it a rather interesting part of my life. Life in a jail is rather different than living in a home without bars and a continual stream of captive guests.” During her eight years as jail matron, she planned menus assisted with the cooking and supervised cleaning of the kitchen. She also helped the cook slide well laden trays through the “grub hole” in a wide iron door to hungry prisoners waiting on the other side.

OAKLAND Calif. — The Cincinnati Reds have no plans this Winter to think about dynasties or their place in baseball history. They are more than content with a special year this was. It is a season that comes along, once in a lifetime if you are real lucky .The Reds can talk forever more about the season their team led from wire-to-wire and incredibly swept the Oakland Athletics in the World Series.
