Sidney-Shelby County YMCA Healthy Fall Food Testing

Kherington Shaffer, left, 3, of Sidney, daughter of Mike and Jackie Shaffer, takes a bite of a cheesy pull apart held by Sidney-Shelby County YMCA cook Pam Marshall, of Anna, during a healthy fall food testing Thursday, Oct. 22. Children could try a range of foods and give a thumbs up or a thumbs down which Marshall then recorded. Seasonal taste tests are used by the YMCA to help determine what new foods to add to its Child Development Center’s lunch rotation. The healthy food testing is encouraged by the YMCA of the USA’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards. HEPA teaches children how to make healthy food choices and to enjoy physical activity, contributing to their social and physical development. Some of the foods kids tested were berry smoothies, low fat chocolate caramel chex and a stew. Luke Gronneberg | Sidney Daily News
