SIDNEY — A dramatic goal by Kaitlyn Davis with just three minutes to go evened the score against Wayne Thursday night. But the visiting Lady Warriors scored just two minutes into overtime to bring Sidney’s season to an end in Division 1 Sectional soccer action at the high school.

The loss finished the Lady Jackets’ campaign at 12-5-1. Wayne advances to the sectional finals to face No. 2-seeded Beavercreek.

“While it’s not the way we wanted our season to end, I’m proud of how hard some of my players played and continued to battle through the end,” said Sidney coach Stacey Goffena. “Kaitlyn earned player of the year honors, and goalkeeper Sylvia Hudson led the entire GWOC in shutouts with 13.

“We had an opportunity to end it right at the start of overtime with our two forwards having perfect opportunities to close the game out. But we could not get it in the net,” she added.

Wayne then played a ball to the back side of the field that was not being marked properly and got the game-winner just two minutes into the overtime, the coach said.

Wayne took a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the second half on another backside goal, and it appeared that would be enough. But Davis put in a free kick from 35 yards out to even the score with just three minutes left in regulation.

“I knew once Kaitlyn hit it, it was going in,” said Goffena. “She’s such a competitor and did not want to be defeated.”
