Tax webinar for farmers planned

There is a daylong tax webinar/workshop coming up to help farmers, farm representatives, and rural landowners learn more about special issues with farm tax returns. Tax preparers and individuals who file their own farm taxes are encouraged to attend. Some of the topics to be discussed include changes in tax laws (Section 179 expense deductions and bonus depreciation), inherited property and income tax on farm transfers, livestock transactions, repair regulations, and commodity credit corporation loans.

This six-hour program will be held on Monday, Dec. 14. You can view this live webinar with real-time Question-and-Answer opportunities from home or at one of the close-by host locations: Miami County Extension Office at the Courthouse in Troy or Auglaize County Extension Office at 208 S. Blackhoof St. in Wapakoneta. The cost is $130 which includes the Agricultural Tax Issues Book and lunch. For those who choose not to attend a host location, a web address for the webinar will be sent to those who have registered a week in advance of the December 14th presentation.

The deadline to register is Nov. 23 in order to ensure receipt of the manual via mail in time for the workshop. More information on the workshop, including how to register, can be found at go.osu.edu/taxschools. Participants can contact organizer Larry Gearhardt at 614-292-2433 or [email protected] for more information.

The 2016 Farm Management School, a five-session workshop series, will focus on the financial education that goes along with operating a successful farming operation. The goal of the program is to help young and beginning farmers learn how to become financially savvy and how to make their agricultural operations successful. Although this Farm Management School targets those who are new to agricultural fields, any farmer, producer or agriculture-related industry person is welcome to attend.

The Farm Management School will be held Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 4 for two hours each night. Sessions will be taught by OSU Extension educators and specialists. The workshop will be held at Andersons Marathon Ethanol, 5728 Sebring Warner Road in Greenville.

Topics will include What Is the Mission of Your Farming Operation?, Making Record Keeping Do More Than the Tax Return, Developing Your Balance Sheet, Basics of Finance, Developing Your Business Plan, Farm Transition Planning, and Ag Law 101.

Registration for the workshop series is $50 and includes the program, handouts and refreshments. Contact Sam Custer at 937-548-5215 for more information or a registration form. The deadline to register is December 21st. Payment can be sent to OSU Extension, Darke County, 603 Wagner Ave., Greenville, Ohio 45331.

Beef Producers: BEEF 509 is being offered this next year at the OSU Animal Sciences Building in Columbus. The program is designed to raise the awareness level about the food we produce (beef!) and the reasons why it sometimes misses its mark with consumers’ palates and producers’ pocketbooks. Participants will be assigned to teams that will work together for each day of the program. The live animal evaluation, auction and grid discussion will take place on Feb. 20; carcass grading and fabrication are among the activities planned for Feb. 27.

A maximum of 32 spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration fee is $150. For more information, or to request a registration form, email Emily Jackson at [email protected] or [email protected].
