Lady Cavs stay unbeaten in NWCC

SIDNEY — The Lehman Lady Cavs scored half of their total points — 25 to be exact — in the first quarter in racing past visiting Riverside, 50-29, in a Northwest Central Conference girls basketball game Thursday at Lehman.

The win kept the Lady Cavs undefeated in NWCC play at 3-0 and upped their overall record to 5-6 heading to St. Marys today.

Riverside is now 1-1 in the league and 4-8 overall and hosts Troy Christian today.

Twenty-three of the Lady Cavs’ first-quarter points were scored in the first several minutes of the game, the hosts grabbing a 23-2 lead at the 4:00 mark of the first quarter. The Lehman full court press wreaked havoc on the Riverside attack, forcing the Lady Pirates into a whopping 34 turnovers for the game, many which came in the early minutes and most of which were turned into Cavalier points.

Alana O’Leary scored seven of the Cavs’ first-period points and closed the game with 11, the only player to reach double digits in scoring. Hannah Fogt dropped in eight points and Brogan McIver netted seven.

Aubrey Stephens paced the Pirates with eight points.

New Bremen 59, Coldwater 50

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Lady Cardinals remained very much in the thick of the Midwest Athletic Conference race with a 59-50 victory over Coldwater in a girls game at Bremen Thursday.

The win put the Lady Cardinals at 3-1 in the league and 11-3 overall heading to league-leading Minster next Thursday.

The first quarter was the difference — the Lady Cardinals outscored the visitors 21-11 and maintained the lead the rest of the way.

Paige Jones got hot from long range, sinking four three-pointers and going on to score a game-high 20 points for the Lady Cardinals. Debbie Paul added 16, and Alyse Clune hit three three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Paul was 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

Jones and Clune combined to hit 7 of 14 from three-point range.

Overall, the Lady Cardinals did not shoot well, hitting just 31 percent on 23 for 72. But that was 18 more shots than Coldwater managed, and Bremen held a 7-1 advantage in three-pointers.

Versailles 69, St. Henry 44

ST. HENRY — The Versailles girls also won in the MAC, routing St. Henry 69-44 in action Thursday.

The Lady Tigers go to 2-3 in the league and 10-5 overall heading into a home game against Fort Recovery Thursday.

Versailles led by just 33-27 at the half, but outscored St. Henry 22-6 in the third quarter.

Lauren Monnin had 23 and Kami McEldowney 12 for the Lady Tigers.
