ST. HENRY — Sidney went on the road and came away with a 54-40 victory over St. Henry in non-league girls basketball action Monday night.
The win put the Lady Jackets, ranked No. 8 in the first Associated Press state Division 1 rankings released Tuesday, at 14-0 on the season heading into a Greater Western Ohio Conference North test Wednesday night at Troy.
Sidney led 20-9 after a quarter and 31-15 at the half thanks to holding the Lady Redskins to just 5-for-30 from the field in the first half, and outrebounding them 26-14.
However, St. Henry rallied a bit in the third quarter and cut the lead down to 10 at 37-27, with the Lady Jackets scoring just six points in the quarter.
Sylvia Hudson poured in 25 to lead the Lady Jackets and Celena Taborn added 11 points and seven blocks.
“We came out strong and had a great first half, but got complacent in the third quarter and started turning the ball over and making silly mistakes,” said Sidney coach Megan Mummey. “We kicked it into gear in the fourth quarter with great defense by Sadi Timmons. She held (Ellie) Stammen to zero points in the last five minutes of the ball game, and she had 22 up to that point. We had a lot of people contribute in tonight’s game and I am pleased with our performance heading to Troy tomorrow night for a big league game.”
St. Henry is 3-10 on the year.

Russia 54, Covington 45
RUSSIA — The Russia Lady Raiders continued their hot streak in girls basketball Monday, winning for the sixth time in a row, this one and 54-45 verdict over Covington, which came into the game with a 10-4 record.
“I thought one of the keys was that we didn’t put them on the line,” said Russia coach Tim Hatcher, whose team is now 9-6. “They like to get to the line through dribble penetration. And we didn’t allow them that.”
Maria Herron hit four three-pointers and finished with 18 to lead the Lady Raiders. Whitney Pleiman added 12.
“Whitney gave us a great game, at both ends of the floor,” said Hatcher.
