Fire causes $200,000 in damage

SIDNEY — A garage fire Sunday night caused more than $200,000 damage of the structure and contents of the home.

Sidney firefighters were dispatched to 416 N. Wagner Ave. Sunday at 6:28 p.m. The home owned by Chris and Ruth Halpin and occupied by Bradley and Connie Colburn.

During the response, it was confirmed by police officers on the scene that the garage was fully involved. The occupants had evacuated the structure prior to the arrival of Sidney police officers. A box alarm was called to recall all off-duty fire personnel and mutual aid was received from Anna Fire Department for a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). A separate medical call brought Anna EMS to the city for mutual aid.

When Sidney firefighters arrived, they found a heavy volume of fire coming from the garage and breezeway connected to the main living area. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the flames with multiple fire hoses and performed a search to confirm that all occupants and pets were accounted for. Vectren and DP&L were called to the scene to secure the utilities to the structure.

The garage and breezeway sustained heavy fire damage. The kitchen was also damaged by fire extending from the garage fire. The rest of the home received heavy smoke and slight water damage. Damage was estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $115,000 to the contents. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately three hours to control, extinguish and investigate the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Sidney Fire Investigation Unit.
