SIDNEY — The cause of a fire Sunday on Wagner Avenue has been determined, but the cause of a fatal fire in December remains undetermined, fire officials said Wednesday.

A garage fire at 416 N. Wagner Ave. Sunday night caused more than $200,000 damage to the structure and contents of the home. “The cause of the fire is human error and accidental in nature,” said Brad Jones, chief of the Sidney Department of Fire & Emergency Services.

The Sidney-Shelby County Fire Investigation Unit has determined the area of origin to be the attached garage in the location of a car that was being repaired, Jones said.

The garage and breezeway sustained heavy fire damage. The kitchen was also damaged by fire extending from the garage fire. The rest of the home received heavy smoke and slight water damage.

The home is owned by Chris and Ruth Halpin and occupied by Bradley and Connie Colburn.

The cause of a fire Dec. 7 at 1300 S. Main Ave. that took the life of resident Thomas A. Schroer, 58, remains undetermined, Jones said.

However, investigators have determined where the fire started. The Sidney-Shelby County Fire Investigation Unit, along with the State Fire Marshal’s office, determined the area of origin was a shared wall between the garage and living area of the house, Jones said.

The structure and contents were a total loss, with damage estimated at more than $100,000.
