DAYTON — Alcohol is suspected as a possible cause of a wrong way crash that killed five people, including a former Sidney resident.

The crash happened on I-75 at Ohio 4 around 3 a.m. Saturday in the construction area.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office said James Pohlabeln, 61; Kyle Canter, 23; Earl Miller II, 27; Vashti Nicole Brown, 29; and Devin Bachmann, 26 were killed in the crash. Miller is a former Sidney resident and graduate of Houston High School. His obituary appears on Page 2.

According to a Facebook page, Canter, Miller, and Bachmann were part of a band called Counterflux, a Dayton hard rock band started three years ago.

Dayton Police said Pohlabeln was in a sedan going the wrong way down the highway and slammed into an SUV carrying the three members of the band and Brown.

According to records, Pohlabeln was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Thursday on charges of OVI but was released from jail.

When crews arrived, they said they found the SUV flipped over on top of Pohlabeln’s sedan.

Pohlabeln and the four people in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

I-75 northbound was closed for about five hours while crews investigated and worked to clear the scene.

The Dayton Police Crash Reconstruction Unit will continue to investigate.
