Mayor’s Association of Ohio plans summer conference

COLUMBUS — Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst joined mayors who are members of the Executive Committee of the Mayor’s Association of Ohio for meetings in Columbus this past week. The mayors spent considerable time planning the summer conference, discussing pending legislation that impacts cities and villages, as well as reviewing recent court decisions that impact cities and villages.

The mayors also bade farewell to Ohio Municipal League (OML) Executive Director Susan Cave. Cave is scheduled to retire March 31. She has served as executive director of the OML for the past 26 years. The OML is the umbrella organization for the Mayor’s Association, as well as a number of other municipal government organizations.

Mayor’s Association President and Bellevue Mayor Darrell Banks announced that this year’s conference would be hosted by the city of Dublin. The annual conference is scheduled to be held June 16-18 at the Columbus Marriott Northwest.

Topics of interest identified by the mayors included the use of body cameras by police; Ohio Department of Transportation grant opportunities; roundabouts and the use of brine solutions for treatment of streets; civil wedding ceremonies in light of recent Supreme Court rulings; nuisance complaints involving chickens, bees and feral cats; and refuse collection. The mayors also discussed potential speakers, including a number of state officeholders.

Barhorst has served on the Executive Committee of the Mayor’s Association of Ohio for the past eight years. He represents District 12 (Champaign, Clark, Darke, Miami and Shelby counties).
