TROY — Houston resident Brandon A. Travis, 21, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in Miami County Common Pleas Court on Thursday afternoon.

The plea was part of a plea agreement with the state after Travis was originally charged with first-degree felony rape.

The Piqua Police Department first charged Travis in late January. The incident was originally reported on June 19, when a juvenile claimed that “she was forced to have sex by an adult male,” according to court records.

The victim reportedly named Travis as her attacker. According to court records, the victim claimed that she repeatedly tried to get Travis to stop. The location where the alleged rape took place was a spot in Piqua referred to as “Paradise Falls,” described as a location near the old Piqua Power Plant on County Road 25A.

The victim and her mother reported the incident to the Piqua Police Department, and then the victim completed a sexual assault kit. The results were sent to the Miami Valley Crime Lab in June and a report on the kit was received Jan. 22.

When Travis was first questioned about the incident, he reportedly denied ever having sexual contact with the victim. Travis also reportedly volunteered a buccal swab of his DNA at that time. According to court records, a DNA match to Travis was found in the sexual assault kit.

Travis is facing a possible maximum prison sentence of 18 months and possible fine of up to $5,000.

Due to the nature of the crime, Travis will have to register as a Tier II sex offender. For the next 25 years, Travis will have to register within his county of residence every 180 days. Travis also cannot reside within 1,000 feet of a school, preschool, or daycare center.

Travis’ bond of $150,000 cash or surety was continued over from Miami County Municipal Court. Travis is scheduled to be sentenced on April 11 at 2 p.m.
