SIDNEY — As the season of Lent unfolds and the Year of Mercy marches on, Pope Francis is encouraging all Catholics to go out and live the Works of Mercy.
Students and staff at Holy Angels School are showing special compassion for their brothers and sisters in Christ who live in Appalachia. They have decided to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of the Glenmary Missioners and the people they service in Tennessee and Kentucky.
The students are paying for the privilege of wearing jeans on two designated days in Lent. In addition, the Student Council is sponsoring a cake walk. As of Friday, Feb. 26, $500 had been raised. Members of Holy Angels Parish are donating sheets, towels and washcloths, blankets, toiletries and more. In addition to these items, prayers are being said for the Glenmarians and those they shepherd.
Glenmary Home Missioners is a Catholic society of priests and brothers, who, along with co-workers, serve the spiritual and material needs of communities throughout Appalachia and the South. Glenmary brings a Catholic presence to counties where frequently a significant percentage of residents are unchurched and the poverty rate is over twice the national average. Ecumenical cooperation is fostered as they work in conjunction with other denominations to engage in social outreach and work for social justice.
