Patrick Harmon, the champion backward walker of the world, was in Sidney for a short time today, leaving immediately after dinner for Piqua. His appearance in the city attracted considerable attention. He was accompanied by a watchman, W.H. Baltazar, who walks forward with him and watches to see that every step along the way is taken backward. Harmon is enroute from San Francisco to New York City on a $20,000 wager. The pair has averaged 17 miles a day since they left on August 5 and they expect to complete the trip in 260 days.

W.R. Carothers was elected exalted ruler of the Sidney Lodge of Elks at the annual meeting last evening. William Horstman was named leading Knight; Thomas C. Burch, loyal knight; Harry Custenborder, lecturing knight; Nicholas Chase, tyler; Dr. V.E. Bedford, secretary; Frank M. Smith, treasurer, and George S. Bush, trustee.

County Engineer Earl C. Wooddell conducted the annual county road meeting held yesterday in the assembly room of the court house, with trustees and clerks from 13 of the townships represented. Also present for the meeting were representatives of various firms and a number of state and local officials. Included among the latter was Thomas J. Schoenlaub, state engineer, of Columbus.

Eleven men from Shelby County left Sidney this morning to report to Fort Hayes, Columbus, for induction in the armed service for military training for one year. Additional calls for this month have been received by the local selective service board.

Two Sidney High School speech students received second place medals in the respective categories Saturday when they attended the Ohio High Speech League District 18 speech contest at Springfield North High School. Ann Eisenstein, a senior, placed in girls’ extempore speaking. Gordon Price, a junior, won his medal in oratorical interpretation. Both students are completing their first year of competition.

COLUMBUS – Logan County officials met with Gov. James Rhodes today to sign final papers to qualify for a $100,000 share of the state’s $5 million airport expansion program. Later this week, the Controlling Board is expected to release the $100,000 to the Division of Aviation, which will turn over the money for construction of an airfield near Bellefontaine. The airport will be located 2.2. miles north of the city on U.S. 68. It will be equipped to handle two-engine business aircraft and should be completed by July.

Some of the Shelby County soldiers who served in Operation Desert Storm are beginning to return home. The first to arrive was Lt. Jon Wildermuth. The army veteran is the son of Jon and Helen Wildermuth. Also being welcomed home were Adam Kelly and Mike McClain.

One of the most significant resources in Sidney is the city school’s gifted and talented coordinator, Connie Donovan. She has delivered on many grants over the years. She is now hosting the state convention for her fellow talented and gifted coordinators.
