County firefighters, EMS respond to call for help

SIDNEY — There was no alarm requesting mutual aid from Shelby County fire departments and EMS squads. Only an email from Sidney Fire Chief Brad Jones asking for help … help in staffing the fire department while they support the son of one of their firefighters.

David Stammen, 16, son of Doug and Robin Stammen, of Houston, was diagnosed with stage four Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma in December 2015. His dad is a member of the Sidney Fire Fire Department.

A Walk with a Lymph 5K Run/Walk is being planned for Saturday, March 19, at 9 a.m. at Houston High School.

The walk, said Jones, is the same day Stammen’s crew is scheduled to work. So Jones sent an email to all the fire departments/EMS squads in the county asking for their help.

“We’ll be staffing the station with four Sidney firefighters,” said Jones. “Two members of Doug’s crew requested to stay behind and man the station. Deputy Chief Cam Haller will be the incident commander for the day. A lieutenant from another crew also volunteered to help.”

Jones asked the county departments for one or two additional engines and two ambulance/medic crews to help Saturday morning from 8 to 11:30 a.m. so Stammen and the rest of his crew can attend the 5K.

And the responses came from far and wide in Shelby County. Jones said the response from everyone was “awesome.”

“We’ve had enough apparatus/crew offers that we could have staffed most of the state that morning,” Jones said in an email to all the county chiefs.

Kettlersville Fire Department is sending one engine and its crew to help Saturday. Anna Fire Department is also sending one engine and crew. Perry Port Jefferson EMS is sending a squad, medic and crew.

The Sidney firefighters, said Jones, will help the visiting crews find their way around Sidney on the calls they receive.

Race day registration starts at 7 a.m. in the school commons, with the 1-mile fun run starting at 8:40 a.m. and the 5K starting at 9 a.m. The course will start in the school parking lot, travel down Smith Road and finish at the finish line on the school’s track. So far, 350 have signed up for the race.

All proceeds from the race will go to David’s cancer fund. Anyone looking to donate to the Stammen family in other ways that attending the race may make donations to “David Stammen’s Cancer Fund” by calling or visiting any Osgood State Bank branch. David has requested that any amount of funds raised over the amount needed to pay his medical expenses be used to buy new gaming consoles and video games for Dayton Children’s Hospital.
