March 17, 1916

Captain Melvin Rhoades stated this morning that Co. L of the National Guard is in tip-top shape and can be ready for duty in three hours should the call come for service in the Mexican situation.

Mrs. M.M. McIntire was elected president of the Ladies’ Aid of the Presbyterian Church when members met in the home of Mrs. James Bush yesterday afternoon. Mrs. W.T. Amos was named vice president; Mrs. Maude Greene, secretary and Mrs. B. M. Sharp, treasurer.

75 Years

March 17, 1941

The English photographic studio, which was formerly in the Murphy Building, has been moved to the third floor of the Ohio Building in rooms formerly occupied by the Hadley and Artcraft studios. Homer English, owner, said the change is being made to acquire much needed additional space.

Nineteen men are scheduled to leave tomorrow morning for Fort Hayes, Columbus, where they will be inducted into military service. Local selective service officials said this morning another 15 men will leave on March 28.

One thousand two-day old chicks and more than 30 rabbits were burned to death this morning when the brooder house on the Julius Ernst farm, 2 ½ miles east of Fort Loramie was heavily damaged by fire. The Fort Loramie and Minster Fire Departments responded to the call and prevented complete destruction of the building.

50 Years

March 17, 1966

CELINA – Lou Goettemoeller, former state and national plowing champion, has been named the county’s outstanding farmer by the Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District officials.

Goettemoeller, presently farms 390 acres in Mercer, Darke and Shelby counties with two of his six sons.

He entered his first plowing contest in 1928 at the age of 16 with a three horse team and a riding sulky plow. He won the state contest three times and in 1956 the national title. He competed twice in the world plow matches, once in Ohio and again in Germany.

Cadet R. Leon Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Max Hayes, Spruce Avenue, was on the dean’s list for the first semester at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Cadet Hayes is in his second year at the academy.

March 17, 1991

The fourth annual YMCA financial management seminar will be held on March 28, 1991. The guest speaker will be Peter Badger. He is the vice-president of West Cap Management. Well over 100 people typically attend the seminar. Contact the YMCA for tickets. It is free and open to the public.

The Fort Loramie Lady Redskins are regional basketball champs once again. The perennial power defeated Middletown Fenwick 45-40 in the reginal finals to advance to the state tournament. They will face undefeated McDonald with a record of 26-0 in the state semi-final game.
