SIDNEY — Staff for Congressman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, 4th District, will visit a few Shelby County area high schools on Thursday, April 7, to speak with students about the application process for attending one of the U.S. Military Service Academies.

At 9 a.m., Deputy District Director Barbara Taylor will visit Fairlawn High School in Sidney (18800 Johnston Road). At 10:30 a.m. she will visit Jackson Center High School in Jackson Center (204 Linden Street). At 1:15 p.m. she will visit Lehman Catholic High School in Sidney (2400 St. Mary’s Avenue).

The five military academies offer a tremendous opportunity for the highly motivated students who wish to serve their country. Students are nominated for an appointment to one of the five academies, and nominations must come from an “authorized source.” Three-fourths of all nominations are made by Members of Congress. Nominations assist Academy directors in selecting the best candidates to build the future leaders of America and our Military.

A review board including veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces considers each fourth district applicant for the nomination.

The five academies are The United States Military in West Point, New York; The United States Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, New York; The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut; and the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Taylor has traveled throughout the 4th District to speak to students about the application process.
