April 8, 1916

An enthusiastic meeting of the local camp of the Spanish War Veterans was held at the armory last evening, recalling experiences of 1898. An army meal of baked beans, rye bread, hard tack and coffee was served at 10 o’clock. During the evening the boys also enjoyed themselves at shooting at the indoor rifle range.

Pancho Villa continues to elude the United States and Carranza forces, pushing southward into the Mexican wilds and farther and farther from the American border and the American army’s supply base.

75 Years

April 8, 1941

Thirteen new members and 15 renewals were reported when the Shelby County motor club completed its reorganization at its meeting last night. A.L. Sprague was re-elected president; E.C. Amos, first vice president; L.E. Marrs, second vice president; Arthur Allinger, treasurer, and C.L. Seving, secretary.

When the U.S.S. North Carolina, latest addition to the United States battle fleet was placed in commission today, she carried into service Sidney-made products. Freezing equipment aboard the dreadnaught, the first to be built by the United States in 18 years, was built by Copeland Refrigeration Corp., of this city. Similar equipment is being installed aboard the U.S.S. Washington, scheduled to be commissioned in May.

April 8, 1966

Tom Archer, senior at Fairlawn High School, left this week for London, England, on a two-week trip with the American Student Ambassadors program sponsored by the International Congregational Council.

TROY – Paul Noffsinger, 55, of Sidney, former sales manager of the Everyday Manufacturing Co., Sidney, has been appointed welfare director for Miami County by the Miami County Commissioners. Noffsinger was the first social welfare case worker in Montgomery County in the 1930’s and has served as a minister of a church in Indiana.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio State football coach John Cooper says that unlike a lot of Buckeye fans, he’s not spending his time wondering who will win the starting quarterback job during spring practices. A quarterback must be found to replace Frey, who seldom left the field in three years as starter. Last year’s backup, senior Kent Graham, will be the leader going in with junior Kirk Herbstreit and freshmen Joe Pickens and Preston Harrison expected to challenge.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Nancy Reagan carried on an affair with Frank Sinatra, smoked pot with her husband while he was governor of California and pulled strings in the White House, says a juicy new biography due in book stores today. “The best thing I could say about Mrs. Reagan is she was a good president,” the book’s author, Kitty Kelley, said in an interview Sunday. Former President Reagan was asked about the book as he and Mrs. Reagan went to church services in Bel-Air on Sunday. “I don’t think a church would be the proper place to use the word I would have to use in discussing that,” he said.
