Kiwanis Club learns about airport

SIDNEY —Mike Chappie, manager of the Sidney airport, addressed the Kiwanis Club of Sidney during the club’s March 23 meeting.

Chappie discussed the many expansions and the different ownerships the airport has had throughout the years.

He reported that every county in Ohio has an airport. In addition, he spoke about the history of Sidney Airport: The airport was started in 1957 by Robert Willman. The airport had a 2,500-foot grass runway. It was expanded in 1959 with an all-weather paved runway. In 1962, the ownership passed to Paul Clark. Clark inherited the airport and donated the newly expanded, 3,200-foot runway to the city. Clark maintained the rest of the grounds.

The Sidney Airport currently has a 5,000-foot, paved runway to allow for bigger planes.

“It is my hope to attract more businesses to Sidney, Ohio,” Chappie said. Chappie also stated that the airport has additional room for expansion if needed.

“Our small airport caters to businesses and is awesome for the community,” said Chappie.
