SIDNEY — An accidental fire, caused by a discarded cigarette, displaced a family early Wednesday morning.

On April 20, 2016, at approximately 12:46 a.m., the Sidney Fire Department responded to 520 Arrowhead Drive on a report of a house fire.

The house is a two story single family residence. All off duty personnel were called in to assist in the fire fight along with mutual aid from Anna and Lockington Fire Departments and Perry Port Salem EMS.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered a large volume of fire involving the attic and the rear deck of the residence. Smoke detectors alerted the family of the fire. The family members of the home, Jim and Lori Frye and their two children, were all safely evacuated prior to arrival of the fire crews. The firefighters immediately started to extinguish the fire. The family dog was rescued by firefighters performing a search during the fire operations. A few personal items were able to be retrieved for the family.

Working smoke detectors save lives. No injuries were reported by the family or the emergency responders. Utilities were secured by personnel on the scene.

Members of the Sidney/Shelby County Fire Investigation Unit determined the fire origin to be on the exterior of the structure and located on the deck. They determined the cause of the fire to be accidental and caused by a discarded cigarette.

The damage has been estimated at $160,000 for the building and $60,000 for the contents.

The family is being assisted by their family.
