April 21, 1916

Plans for additional street improvements in Sidney occupied the attention of members of city council at their meeting last evening, with the city solicitor instructed to prepare a petition for property owners on North Main and North Miami Avenues. The Big Four railroad advised council that it would have plans for the North Main Avenue crossing ready in another week. Council also authorized the mayor and clerk of council to enter into a contract with some band for a series of concerts during the summer months.

75 Years

April 21, 1941

Sgts. Paul Starrett and Clarence Roberts; Cpl. Gerald Molitor, and Pvts. Omar Patton and Victor Johnson are home from Camp Shelby at Hattiesburg, Miss. for 15-day furloughs.

Hubert A. Beery, Sidney attorney, announced today that he will be a candidate on the Democratic ticket for the office of city solicitor at the primary election on Aug. 12. Beery has been practicing in Sidney for the past two years, with offices in the Mathers building on the west side of the square.

50 Years

April 21, 1966

BOTKINS – Botkins High School’s junior class was compelled to postpone presentation of its annual play on Friday night because of illness of a leading player. Jerry Kaylor, director, revealed that John Maurer contract the Asiatic “flu,” and won’t be available until the first of the week. The play was moved back until Tuesday.

A Holstein dairy farmer in the Jackson Center area “hit the jackpot” March 15 when an eight-year-old gave birth to triplet heifers. She was one of a 19-cow herd and one who had never had a multiple birth prior to this spring. A Holstein calf ordinarily weighs about 80 to 100 pounds. The mother of the calves, ordinarily proud of her offspring, this time failed to show any interest. The calves were fed by bottles and are now drinking a total of 10 gallons of milk a day. The mother languished for about two weeks and “the vet was surprised she recovered from the event.”
