April 23, 1916

Little interest was manifest at the presidential primary election held in the county yesterday. The vote was the lightest ever known and in a few precincts only the judges and the clerks of the election precincts cast ballots. On the Democratic ticket, Woodrow Wilson received 624 votes for president, with William J. Bryan and Champ Clark each receiving four votes. On the Republican ticket, Theodore Burton received 369 votes for president. Theodore Roosevelt had 10; Charles E. Hughes, three and Henry Ford, two.

75 Years

April 23, 1941

One hundred and fifty-four young men and women will graduate from the nine Shelby County high schools during the month of May, Supt. C.E. McCorkle announced today in releasing the dates for commencement and the names of the speakers. Anna will have 33 graduates; Botkins, 15; Jackson Center, 28; Russia, 12; Fort Loramie, 19; Green Township, 11; Houston, 23; Perry Township, 13.

Heroic Greek resistance crumbled today before the mighty onslaught of the highly mechanized Nazi army and its swarms of bombing planes. Communications with Athens has been cut off and it is reported that King George and his government has fled the capital to the island of Crete. Reports from Berlin indicated that the fall of Athens may be expected at any time.

50 Years

April 23, 1966

Nine Sidney and two area students, in undergraduate studies at Ohio State University, were named to the winter quarter honor roll. From Sidney are William D. Barker, Susan Blake, Nancy A. Burrey, Lynn P. Cook, Michael Friend, Karen S. Helman, Gene R. Hoellrich, Anthony L. Jones, and Thomas L. Niemeyer. The area students listed were Ricki L. Short, Anna, and Joyce Swartz Wildermuth, Jackson Center.

Rainbow Garden Club members attended “April’s Whim,” presented by Lazarus, Columbus, and the judges council of regions eight and nine of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. Attending from the Sidney area were Mrs. Albert Kemp, Mrs. Clifton Steenrod and Mrs. Walter Rodehafer.

25 Years

April 23, 1991

Baumfolder Corporation of Sidney has been purchased by two German companies. Baumfolder operations will be expanded through relocation of a related, Cleveland firm to the Sidney plant and production of products from the German owners. The announcement of the purchase was made Friday by Niels M. Winther, president and chief executive officer of the Baum group, a subsidiary of East Asiatic Co. (EAC) of Denmark. Baumfolder makes paper folders for the graphic arts industry.

Pictured reading to an attentive audience is local attorney Stanley Evans, one of nine local residents who participated in the Great American Read Aloud program coordinated by libraries throughout the country during National Library Week. Children taking part in the activities at Amos Memorial Library heard Evans read a story titled “Casey at the Bat.” Listening to the story are Kristina Cottrill, 7 ½, Brittany Cottrill, 7 ½, Allison Kocher, 6, and Lindsey York, 5.
