Staff members learn about social styles

NEW BREMEN — Staff from Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce businesses enjoyed lunch Wednesday, while also learning about themselves.

At the chamber’s Annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon guest speaker Rebecca Oltijenbruns, from the Center for Practical Management, gave a presentation entitled “Social Styles: How it May Affect Effective Communication”.

She explained the importance of recognizing communication styles, helped those in attendance figure out their own personal communication style, and showed the traits most likely to be identified with those styles.

“Groups of co-workers might have ‘ah-ha’ moments as you look around the table and determine ‘oh your social style is the same as mine, that’s why we get along so well’. Or ‘your social style is different and that’s why our communication is more challenging’,” Oltijenbruns said.

Once you know your style, the chances are everyone in your workplace won’t all be the same, she said. Your communication style doesn’t change, “but your willingness to be versatile does.”

She gave those in attendance an assessment and the different communication styles were identified. At the end she gave tips to practice adjusting personal styles to better communicate with those who have different styles.

Also at the lunch Wednesday an informal fashion show was put on my Emmy’s Bridal and J Boutique. Door prizes were also given away. The event was sponsored by The Minster Service Club.
