SIDNEY — A Maplewood woman was killed late Wednesday night while she was giving care to a dog which she had struck.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said Katriz M. Dilworth, 38, of Maplewood, was killed in the accident. Dilworth was traveling in the 10000 block of Sidney Freyburg Road near Anna around 11 p.m. Their preliminary investigation has led them to believe that Dilworth struck a dog with her vehicle. She left her vehicle to help the animal when she was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Timothy J. Huelskamp, 51, of Wapakoneta.

“We received a 911 call about an accident,” said Chief Deputy Jim Frye. “When the deputies got on the scene they discovered a lady in the ditch.”

Anna Fire and Anna Rescue responded to the scene. CareFlight transported the woman to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, where she was pronounced dead.

Huelskamp left the scene of the accident and turned himself in at the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Thursday morning. He was then transported to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

“He said he went to Auglaize County because he’s familiar with the deputies there,’ said Frye. “He went there and said ‘I think I hit somebody last night.’”

The Auglaize County deputies, said Frye, were able to connect the statements and “realized this was our accident.”

Dilworth, said Frye, was returning to her home from her ex-husband’s grandmother’s house. She was helping his mother who had surgery recently.

Huelskamp has been charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident, a third-degree felony. He is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail and will appear in court at 9 a.m. Friday.

The case remains under investigation.

The is the second fatality in Shelby County in less than a week. On Saturday, May 7, Edward “Ed” Fitzpatrick, 57, of Sidney, was killed when he was involved in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of state Route 589 and Middleton Hume Road in Green Township.
