May 14, 1916

While Otto Flowers, foreman at the machine shop at the Philip Smith Co., was engaged in a friendly scuffle with a friend last evening, he suffered a broken leg. The limb was twisted in such a manner that both bones in the lower part of the leg were broken. Drs. Hobby and Gudenkauf were called to attend him and he was then taken to his rooms at Dar Warner’s.

75 Years

May 14 1941

Twenty-one members of the senior class at Sidney High school were today named to the National Honor Society. The group includes: Anita Apple, Betty Bertsch, Russel Bunker, Jane Deam, Richard Gusching, Joe Kerber, Helen Kingseed, Mary Kratt, Barbara Lonsbury, Eleanor Lee, Virginia McMillen, Ruth Maruer, William Milligan, Jane Quinn, Margaret Reitz, Homo Schamp, June Seving, Charles Stengel, Virginia Stump, Luke Thaman, and Mary Van Dine.

T.J. Kerrigan, actively associated with the real estate business in Sidney and Shelby county for the past two years, announced today that he has taken over the real estate business and office of the late H.E. Bennett, and will continue the business in its present location at 120½ North Main avenue.

50 Years

May 14, 1966

An election of officers was featured when the Fort Loramie Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America met for the final meetings of the 1965-66 club year. The event was held April 27 in the Fort Loramie School.

Elected to the office of president for the coming school year was Chris Winner. She will be assisted by Susie Hoelscher, vice president; Judi Perin, secretary; Cheryl Borchers, treasurer, Sara Boerger, parliamentarian; Jane Eilerman, historian; Nancy Sherman, news reporter; Ruth Sandes, recreational leader.

VERSAILLES – A couple of Versailles brothers who have not seen each other for two years will have a long reunion starting in September.

James Hart, 27, librarian at Versailles High School for the past five years, was notified that he has received a fellowship to study for a doctor of philosophy degree in education administration at Ball State University, Muncie, In.

Dale Hart, 25, with the Peace Corps in Ivory Coast, West Africa, for the past two years, has received an assistantship to further his studies in physical education at the same college at the same time.

Both are graduates of Versailles High School, Jim in 1957 and Dale in 1958.

U.S. Army Spec, Mark Shank, formerly of Fort Loramie, is not likely to forget his meeting with Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, commander of Operation Desert Storm forces in the Middle East. Shank, who specializes in helicopter repair and maintenance, and two other soldiers were selected from a crowd of 3,000 departing American servicemen to meet the general.

Barbara Frantz, director of child care services at the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA, has been selected as the YMCA of the USA Outstanding Child Care Director for the Midwest Field.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A newly introduced Senate bill to revamp the state’s school funding system would provide long-term equity among districts but would produce no overnight solution, the sponsor of the measure said.
