May 16, 1916

A delegation of Piqua city officials was in Sidney yesterday to inspect the break in the Miami and Erie canal feeder north of Sidney as a result of the high water earlier this month. The repair of the break is of much importance to Piqua in as much as that city receives a considerable part of its water supply from the Lewistown reservoir by way of the canal.

75 Years

May 16, 1941

A terrific wind and rain storm hit the city and county at noon today and left a wide trail of trees blown down, broken limbs and branches all over the community. The storm took its toll of an old landmark, when it blew down the Ely blacksmith shop, southeast of the city. John Ely, who had operated the shop for many years, had just gone to his home nearby for lunch and saw the building crash to the ground. At the Presbyterian Home a small building was blown down and a silo on the Home farm was toppled.

In attendance from Sidney at the annual spring conference of the 157th district of Rotary International at Sandusky yesterday, were: President-elect and Mrs. F.A. McLean; President Frank Hetzel, Secretary Leo McFarland, Rev. Dallas Browning, Joseph Wright, and L.R. Wagner.

50 Years

May 16, 1966

Shearl Edler, teacher in the Sidney High School for the past 11 years, has been awarded a grant to study methods of teaching English to advanced high school pupils at Purdue, University, West Lafayette, Ind. Edler leaves June 20 and returns Aug. 12.

Until two years ago Edler had taught Spanish in the high school and in some elementary schools. He moved to the English department which also includes journalism, a field he became familiar with when he served in Japan during the Korean war as a U.S. Army public information officer.

A 15-year-old Lockington boy, David Knipe, made the highest score in the state in the annual Ohio scholarship tests this year. He is a sophomore at Hardin-Houston High School. His subject was biology and his rating was 123 out of a possible 147 points.

It was the second year in a row that David, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Richard Knipe, gained high honors in the annual state tests.

25 Years

May 16, 1991

The artistic work of a Sidney firm will be on display for all arrivals to the International Special Olympics this summer as well as all students at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.

VisionMark Inc. of Sidney has shifted its business focus over the last year to do

Design work as well as building products, said David Clarkson, president. The business has invested in more people and equipment in the art department in order to also do design work as well as make a variety of signage work.

One of the first projects of the expanded art department has been to make a free-standing art display for the International Special Olympics in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN this summer to recognize volunteers, said Clarkson.
