SIDNEY — The Sidney Civic Band will open its 2016 season, Friday, June 10, with a free concert on the courtsquare beginning at 7 p.m.

“Our first concert, ‘Play That Song Again,’ will feature audience favorites through the years. All of the selections are singable, with lots of beat, and cause foot-tapping, smiles and real happiness in the heart,” said Artistic Director and Conductor Phil Chilcote.

The concert will include marches by Osterling, Fillmore, Handy, and John Philip Sousa. It will also include Leroy Anderson tunes, “The Syncopated Clock,” “Blue Tango,” “Jazz Pizzacato” and “Bugler’s Holiday.” Also included will be “Funiculi, Funicula,” “Opus One” and “Music of the Night.” Finishing the concert will be “The Baby Elephant Walk” and “Instant Concert,” a collection and snippets from many, many tunes, and the closing signature selections, “God Bless America” and the United States’ official march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

The band will include local high school students in its apprentice program, giving the students an opportunity to play with experienced musicians and learn new techniques. They are Kelsea Jones, trumpet, Jackson Center; Emily Reinhardt, flute, Lehman; Avery Voress, tuba, Sidney; and Kambria Hamilton, horn, Fairlawn.

Refreshments will be available for purchase from Connection Point Church of God Relay for Life team, beginning 30 minutes prior to the concert. A Spot pie will be given to the winner of “The Spot Pie Question,” and a tray of baked goods from Sidney’s Bob Evans’ restaurant will also go to a lucky fan.

“We are really hoping and praying that we can be outside this summer, as last year all of our Friday nights were rained out for the first time in 39 years. Remember two things: Friday nights never sounded so good! And bring a chair to the square,” said Chilcote.

In case of rain, the concert will be at Connection Point Church of God, 1510 Campbell Road.
