SIDNEY — The Shelby County Historical Society will conduct its 16th annual Graceland Cemetery Tour, June 16, at 8 p.m.

The free event is open to the public, who should meet in the middle of the cemetery to begin the tour.

Linda DeVelvis and Rich Wallace will serve as tour guides.

In keeping with the society’s program theme for 2016, “Intrepid Women,” the cemetery tour will highlight the stories of some of the county’s women who took the risks necessary to create the opportunities women have today. Their lives and legacies will be revealed.

Among others, subjects will include Catherine Dingman, who shared stories of her early years as a pioneer woman in Shelby County before her death at 100. Several early Shelby county families were impacted by the violence that erupted when the culture of the Shawnee Indians clashed with pioneer settlers moving into the area. Those attending will learn about the Dilbone Massacre and other Native American stories. Some of the local families, including the Haslups and Goodes, produced women who made their mark on Shelby County and national history.

The guides will also share information on why tombstone design was an important consideration for Shelby Countians in the 19th century. Grave markers were used to reflect a family’s faith and religious practices.
