The crop of grasshoppers this year is the largest ever known. They have stripped the second crop of clover of all leaves and are damaging outsides of the corn fields.

100 Years

August 15, 1916

Misses Dorothy Jones and Ethel Huffman, winners in the popularity contest, left yesterday on the 10-day trip. They met winners of the other towns in Bellefontaine. They will visit Toledo, Detroit, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Toronto and Montreal, Canada.

75 Years

August 15, 1941

A mobile recruiting trailer, carrying a group from headquarters in Cincinnati, will be in Sidney tomorrow to secure applicants for the Army Air Corps. The trailer will be located on the west side of the square.

A 10 percent cut in gasoline deliveries to 100,000 service stations, the first rationing step to hit the American public in World War II, went into effect today in 17 eastern and southern states and District of Columbia.

50 Years

August 15, 1966

Ralph J. Stolle, Sidney industrialist, has been elected treasurer by the board of directors of Fidelity National Life Insurance Co., of Columbus, O. A past member of the board of director’s of Fidelity Life, Stolle is present of Stolle Corp, Sidney; Yoder Die Cast Co. and Sheffer Corp. of Cincinnati.

Gene E. Billing, assistant cashier at the First National Exchange Bank, left Monday for two weeks study at the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. This will be Billing’s third year at the school, which requires two weeks’ attendance each year for three years to earn the certificate of graduation.

25 Years

August 15, 1991

Rain shortened the annual Sidney Electric Golf Outing at Shelby Oaks Thursday, making a winner out of Doug Schmidt, who was 4-under after 14 holes. Schmidt was declared the winner, edging Paul Borders by one stroke. Tony Zender and Billy Burke each were at 1-under after 14 holes.
