October 14, 1891
In nearly every county mock elections have been held to instruct electors in the intricacies of the new election law. Something of that kind should be done here. The political clubs would do well if they would open a school for such instruction and invite everybody to vote.

William Shine yesterday received five barrels of assorted California wines-claret, hock, Riesling, burgundy and sauterne-from Los Angeles. The shipment, the first large one from California, was 32 days to transit.

J. Frank Hanley, former governor of Indiana and Prohibition candidate for president will be in Sidney Oct. 19 and will speak at the assembly room of the court house at 10:40 a.m. He will be accompanied by Ira Landrith, the party’s candidate for vice-president. Both speakers are coming aboard the Prohibition special train, being used in the great nationwide campaign.

The Sidney High School football team journeyed to Urbana Saturday and annexed their first victory of the season by defeating the high school team at that place 19 to 0. Some stellar play was shown by all the Sidney players, with that of Capt. Lonsbury at full back; Dick Wolfe at quarterback and Rusty Blake, at half back outstanding.

C.R. Bolton, of Columbus, submitted the low bid for the construction of the new Court street bridge across the Great Miami river, when bids were opened today in Columbus. The Bolt-on price was $72,240. There were six other bids for the work.

The division of conservation and natural resources announced yesterday the placing of 2,600 channel catfish in Lake Loramie. The fish averaged 12 inches in length. Lake Loramie is rapidly becoming one of the largest fishing meccas in the state.

John Masteller of Battle Creek. Mich., son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Masteller, Sidney is co-author of a new book for saxophone players, students and teachers. Entitled “Modern Saxophone Techniques”, the book is published by Hal Leonard Music, Inc. Wiona, Minn. A graduate of Sidney High School he received his B.S.N. degree from Capital University at Columbus and holds an M.M. degree from the University of Michigan.

PORT JEFFERSON- W.L. McDaniels was named president of the Community Club at Thursday Night’s meeting. Other new officers are Virgil Gates, vice-president; Paul Heintz, treasurer; Irene Cook, secretary; and Martha Imondi; publicity chairman. James Doak and Don Wade were chosen town trustees, Eldon Ely and Burton Miars were named county trustees and Robert Burk, trustee-at-large.

He’s not her favorite player, but Jill Davison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Davison recently met Cincinnati Reds player Carmelo Martinez just prior to a Red’s game this past season. Miss Davison was selected to participate in the Mild Duds Celebrity Batboy/Batgirl program sponsored by Leaf, Inc., a major candy maker. She served at the celebrity batgirl on July 15, when the Reds hosted the St. Louis Cardinals. She is a fifth-grade student at Northwood School and played on the Atoms in the Sidney Electric G-Ball softball league at Custenborder Field. Her favorite Red is Barry Larkin.
