McCracken addresses Rotary Club

SIDNEY — Stacie McCracken, of McCartyville, presented a program recently to the Sidney Rotary Club about her time as the undergraduate student trustee on the Ohio State University Board of Trustees.

The 2011 graduate of Fort Loramie High School majored in agriculture education at OSU. She received her degree in 2015 and is employed by the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association.

McCracken was involved with student council in college and also participated in three overseas study opportunities, making stays in Ireland, Ecuador and Brazil. She also completed three summer internships, one with Ohio Ag Net, and others in Columbus and Washington, D.C.

She said that when the opportunity came to apply for the student trusteeship, she was too busy, but other students encouraged her to apply.

She got an interview with a 15-member student panel. Much to her surprise, she made it to the final round: an interview with Gov. John Kaisch. The interview with the governor was just like having a conversation about yourself with a close friend, she said. Several days later, the governor called and offered her the trusteeship.

McCracken had a two-year term on the board of trustees as a nonvoting member. She was at all meetings including executive sessions and was always asked her opinion. The hiring of the new president of Ohio State was one of the first items during her tenure. That person was Michael Drake, and Stacie formed a lasting friendship with him. Drake visited her family’s farm in 2015. McCracken said the most difficult situation during her term was the marching band director controversy. She said attending graduations and the national championship football game in 2014 with the board were highlights of her tenure. As a board member, she received a national championship ring.
